I use onboard sound and im happy with it until now, I am having trouble recording streaming audio. I have used a few programs but none of them work. I have Soundmax HD on an Asus P5B deluxe motherboard. I think it would work if i bought a sound card. I would like to get the Asus Xonar. Do you think my sound card does not support streaming audio>? Thanks

Streaming audio... what are you referring to? Are you playing the audio back on your PC or a different device and want to record it on the PC? You didn't even tell us the problems you are having.

Regardless, a different soundcard isn't going to make a difference. Its all in the software.

Yeah, I was gonna say that. That's still software issue, nothing that a soundcard will help.
Creative sound cards call it "What U Hear". Your onboard audio might call it differently. It basically refers to sound inside your computer, in perfect quality, before it gets played by your speakers. With Applications, you can get that sound and either record it, or make it think it's your actual microphone. So yes, is all software. By streaming I think you refer to Streaming radio stations, and videos, where it is not possible to stop it and save it because it's Live, or Protected. Am I right? If so, then you don't need a sound card, you only need to find your equivalent to "What U Hear", and an application that can use it as a recording option, aside from microphone.

A low tech option would be to get a very short 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord and connect one end to the audio output on the SoundMax integrated audio, and then the other end of the cord into the audio input of the SoundMax. Then just use a program like Audacity to record the audio from the line input.

Apparently recording any streaming audio i.e. internet audio or anything playing that you can hear through your speakers does not work using onboard sound with this mobo. This problem is widespread with people using the Asus p5b's onboard sound. Guess its time to buy a seperate sound card. Thanks for your replies.
