Sound card on riser adapter?

Hey guys,

I'm preparing to add a second video card, and it looks like the new card will block my only standard PCI slot. I have been using this original Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic for several years and it is still going strong, so rather than jump on replacing it I am looking at adapters and risers. My case (HAF-XM) has one of those vertical expansion slots for an extra PCI card away from the motherboard, so this seems like a good starting point for a riser.

However, it doesn't look like I will be able to use a riser ribbon thing directly to the PCI slot because there is only about 2-3mm of clearance under the video card shroud. I've ordered one anyways in hopes that it might clear, but it probably wont.

Assuming the regular pci riser doesnt fit, I found this interesting adapter as a possibility:

Has anyone around here ever used something like this with a sound card? I suppose I would remove the stub bracket on the adapter and connect it to the sound card hanging from the expansion slot. Then I just need to plug a pci-e x1 riser ribbon to a free slot on my motherboard.

In theory that thing looks ok, but seems sketchy to me. To add some credence, someone is selling enclosures that work on the same principle:

So what do ya think? Should I just kiss the aging X-Fi goodbye and get a Xonar DX or roll the dice on a ghetto mod?

seriously my friend.....you can pick up sound blaster z for 55 bucks on sale....I personally wouldn't invest money in adapters at this point

I was in the same boat as you... I had an X-Fi Fatal1ty with the faceplate that I clung to for years until I just couldn't get it to fit properly with things in an SLI configuration. I got a PCI extender to try and keep the card by mounting it half-assed vertical (case didn't accommodate vertical mount). Eventually I gave up on that endeavor and replaced it with a Xonar DGX and couldn't be happier. Wish I had just done that up front.
 
Alright guys thanks for the responses. The consensus around the SBZ seems positive overall, figure I'll give that a shot. I was just leaning towards a xonar after the recon 3d seemed to disappoint, but it seems that creative redeemed themselves with the Z.

The vertical expansion mount was going to be a bad fit anyways, a side panel fan was nearly making contact with one of the caps on the card. And I have plenty of friends that would love a sound card upgrade :)
