I'm looking at buying logitech z-680's, but i would like a soundcard to go with it. I listen to a lot of music, and i do play the odd game. I was also wondering about using the optical in on the speakers but i don't want that face plate for the audigy 2 cards. what other options do i have?
 
the most widely regarded as "the best" soundcard out there is the E-mu 1212m. I'm organizing a group buy for those cards at another forum, and have been able to score $165 + shipping each. let me know if you're interested!

Not a HUGE gamer, but love audio, sounds like your a perfect candidate for an Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 or M-Audio Revolution. Both play music far better than Creative, and will game just fine, although they do hog more CPU than Creative.
 
the E-mu card will wipe both of them off the face of the planet! It's not REALLY a creative card, mind you....just a creative sticker. And yes, I agree that those cards will perform better than an Audigy.

That is a little more than i was looking to spend, optical isn't a necessity. But it does seem like a sweet card by all means. Any other sound cards that might match my needs?
 
I really like the Audigy 2 ZS cards. You can get the plain Audigy 2 ZS for around $88 at Newegg and ZipZoomFly has the Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Limited Edition which comes with 5 full version games including Halo for $128 and free 2-day shipping along with a $30 MIR. I ordered one :).

And unless your really set on the Logitech z-680's you could save quite a bit of money by going with the Logitech z-5300's for $139 at Newegg and still get great sound.
 
For Sub > 100, I would look at an Audigy 2 card as it will do almost everything you want it to do.

But since you do listen to a lot of music an M-audio revolution may be what you want, but it does not game extremely well.

I think you would be happy either way.
 
Ya, well I'm really good friends with the guys that have a computer store here (small city) and i can get the z-680's for 400 CND which is i think 20 bucks above their cost price. and i just checked online at a canadian store and the 5300's are $215. Are the z-680's worth the extra money?
 
i've heard from audiofiles at headfi that the chaintech 7.1 soundcard is comparable to music quality to the m-audio revolution, and audigy 2. notice as i only said music, not gaming. it can be had on newegg for 30-40$. then again, the z680s and almost entire logitech line sucks for music (only good for gaming becuz they're bassy, and lack sound clarity).
 
For speakers should i just save up and go for the klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 then. I have read many reviews and of course people pick them over the z-680's. the klipsch speakers are 200 bucks more totalling $600. I'm no audiophile but i do want decent speakers with a soundcard to match. And i do like bass, and the only complaint about the bass from logitech is that it can be overpowering at times. I will probably just get and audigy 2 oem from the same store for my soundcard. I don't mind how my music sounds on my nforce 2 audio and doubt i would notice a big difference in sound cards.
 
Since you say your no audiophile then there really isn't a point in wasting that extra money on the klipsch speakers. The Logitech speakers sound really nice and i ordered the Logitech z-5300's. The Logitech speakers are the best for gaming and the Klipsch are a little better for music and watching DVD's and stuff like that. Personally, unless your an audio freak there's no point in spending that much money on speakers then there are ones for half the price that sound great to the majority of us who aren't paranoid about our music.
