Sound Bottleneck?

Well right now I have a nice Pioneer 7.1 reciever with an insane (imo) Yamaha 7.1 Setup.

Right now I have a Hercules GTXP 6.1 sound card. The breakout box makes it nice and easy for me to hook the reciever up to my computer via monster cables and such.

What I'd like to know is if some of the newer sound cards like the M-Audio Revolution and the Audigy 2 would provide me with noticeably better sound for my speakers and HD-580's.

One thing I noticed about the Revolution card is that it appears to only have the smaller speaker holes that are made for "computer speakers" opposed to the regular sized monster cable wires I use. So that leads me to believe I'll need to get some sort of adaptor. Which brings up another question, is having the adaptors going to deminish sound quality any?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Edit: I just noticed the M-Audio "Audiophile" appears to have the kind of cable inputs that I would want. Anyone have any experience with this card?

What kind of source material are you using? CDs? MP3s? DVDs?

With DVDs and most CDs, I think you'll notice a difference, but with, say 128 kbps MP3s, I think it'll be harder to justify the additional investment.

Most the Mp3's are 196kbps and yeah a LOT of dvd's and cd's. Plus I game a lot.....

I want everything to sound as good as possible, but I don't want a soundcard that's going to make hooking up my reciever into a Rubiks Cube.

Hmm, the gaming bit may conflict with your plans to avoid unnecessary cables. Unless you buy an nForce based motherboard with SoundStorm, you won't be able to play game sounds over S/PDIF or optical interconnects. Your most flexible option is analog, despite the additional cables needed. Both the Audigy 2 (ZS) and Revolution 7.1 offer outstanding analog output fidelity for the price. I would definitely recommend the Audigy 2 (ZS) or Revolution 7.1 for sources like audio CDs and DVDs, combined with upsampling and the appropriate ASIO driver. M-Audio's implementation is in my opinion more refined (less "bloated"), but your preferences may vary.
