I live in an apartment and I dont want to disturb my neighbors with my late night gaming sessions. I was thinking about getting some sound absorbing foam and mounting it on the wall behind my computer desk. I can't aford to cover the whole wall however. my speakers are about 2ft apart at most, there sitting on each side of my monitor, I have the sub sitting on the floor right below the monitor. mostly what I am wanting to cut down on is my voice, as I use headphones at night anyway. I know I can hear the neighbors voices alot of the time so I know they can hear mine.

Basically what I am asking is how big of an area do I need to cover to reduce the noise going through the wall.
This is what I am looking at getting http://foambymail.com/Eggcrate.html the 72" x 80" x 2 1/2" charcoal.
Will one of these reduce the noise transmission through the wall? I don't yell and stuff and I have a fairly deep voice.

[Edit] Also how can I mount this to the wall so I don't do any permanent damage to the wall?

lol read the post.

The sound deadening should provide a very substantial improvement. I have some in my basement, (auralex 2" thick 16" squares) and it makes a huge difference in echo, but also, if your computer desk is near the wall, the foam just inhales your voice. I would have to yell upstairs if someone is talking and I was facing the wall. It won't block everything: It is not sound proofing, just sound enhancement.

I would recommend getting a whole bunch though. You may even want to double it up on top of itself, to get it really thick. That would be your best bet.

Get headphones.
Read the freaking post, you just make yourself look like an idiot especially when I say that I do use them, And headphones won't do anything about me useing Ventrillo and talking with my friends.

So you think the one sheet will help for now, and I can always get more later if needed.
Please remember, I am on disability, I can't aford the best, if I could I would be living in a house instead of this apartment. Alot of the stuff I have I either scrounged and saved or bought it used. Spending $50 on sound reduction is alot for me. but I don't want to upset my neighbors and I Istill want to be able to game in the late evenings, early nights without getting reported to the landlord.

get some cheap cup holder from mcdonalds like in that hustle and flow movie... yeah looks ghetto but really cheap and works good

Make your own sound absorber. I am.

It costs about less than $20 to make an absorber 2 feet by 4 feet rectangle.

Well, to keep it small and cheap, you would practically have to speak into a small enclosure....As for a deeper sound....think thicker materials. Sound absorption works great at certain frequencies, but not as well for lower frequencies since the transmission medium for lower frequencies could be something solid like wood.

As for the cheapest sound absorption material that looks ugly if you don't do it right....home Depot's or Lowe's fiberglass insulation mats. Get the stuff that is fully encased in plastic. That's more expensive than the regular stuff but better for your health. It's not the breathing of particles that will get you when you use that stuff because fiberglass is too big and heavy to be like asbestos, but rather that when you touch it you will probably get fiberglass itch. That's probably the cheapest material in terms of volumetric coverage per dollar. Of course all of this is could cost a couple of hundred before everything is said and done, but it will work much better than that $30 small square mat that you want to hang on the wall with.
