afaik TDP for whole yonah (and then also for sossaman) line was ~30w..
 
Yeah, too bad the Netburst architecture is actually more suited for server purposes than the P6 architecture. Yonah looks promising, though I don't know who'd want dual-core in laptops. Nobody really gives a flying fuck about mobile performance. But at least it finally found it's way into mainstream desktops, so that's a good thing, I guess... better boards :)
 
So thats Dual-Dual core CPU's? is that Socket 775 or 604? Are those pci-e 8X lanes on the mobo? ...last but not least- Are those desktop chips or server chips? :D

That's four cores at 94 watts from the wall. If that were JUST the CPUs, that would be 27 watts per core, which is the same as the "max" of the current 533MHz bus Dothans. Looks just fine to me.

I'd venture a guess to say the speed was 1.6GHz. Wild ass guess on my part.

Sounds fine, but disappointing. Dothan is up to 2.26 GHz, and the P-M design fared much better from the 130 nm to 90 nm shrink. Oh well, perhaps it's too early to criticize.

I guess that's why people buy $3000 Dell XPS/Alienware/Sager's and such. I have a gaming notebook (1.73ghz with 6600GO.) Mobile performance is very important to many people.

I cant wait to have a Yonah in my Powerbook. It is the Single most thing I am looking forward to in 2006.
 
Yonah was intended to have a TDP of 31w at 2.16Ghz , but info has surfaced on TDP being relaxed up to 49w ( around 2.5Ghz IMO ).

Launch speed for Yonah will be either 2.16 or 2.33Ghz , Sossoman might clock a step higher.That's some real computing muscle!

Hmm...no , Apple won't use Yonah.

Apple will use Merom , new architecture , 2.33+ Ghz , 2 cores , 667/800Mhz FSB , 4 issues wide ( K8 is 3 ) , 14 stage pipeline ( Dothan is 13 ) , 4MB low latency shared L2 , EMT64.

Merom is what you should be looking for.

It is my firm belief that Merom will be in Powermacs, and iMac, but not the notebooks. Im sure super cool, Yonah will make its way into the first Intel Powerbooks, and Single Core Yonah into iBooks.

Hmm...unlikely.

For PowerMacs they'll use Conroe ( desktop version , 65w TDP ) , IMac ( either Conroe or Merom ) and for notebooks definetly Merom ( mobile version , 35w TDP ).

Problem is that Yonah doesn't offer EMT64 , so its absurd to retrograde Mac OSX to 32bit from 64 , that's why they'll use Merom ( far better performance/watt is another reason )

Well, I do indeed hope you are correct. I think Apple did a real smart move going to intel with the "Pentium 5"

I do hope they call it that too :)

I'm curious too. Heck, wasn't Pentium just that because it was the 5th gen chip, and they couldn't copyright 586?

I mean, I know we are getting way beyond 686 architecture, but I'd love to see an Intel Sextium.

It's an update to Dothan.
No major changes, but some tweaks and additions to the power management side of things, and I think they were talking at IDF this year about better SSE instruction handeling.
(in addition to what needed to be done to make them dual core of course)
 
As TDP drops on newer processors, and cooling needs go down, what will happen to all the HSF companies that depend on hotter and hotter processors? I mean, will we be trading our X-90's in for little northbridge looking coolers?

Eh, high end cooling is an incredibly niche market as it is. I know I have personally never had to upgrade from the stock HSF to get a decent overclock.

Then again, with as hot as the new graphics cards are getting, they could just start making coolers for them.

People who want to overclock, or just run silent will always find a need for something better than the stock cooler.

Also keep in mind, most of the desktop products though the end of next year have 60-80W TDP targets. That's still a decent investment in cooling waiting to happen.
Personally I'd love to put a 9W ULV dual core Yonah in my desktop (though I doubt I'd want to pay the premium for it....), but then again there are far more people (at least around here) that would like to get a Sossaman, Ceadar Mill, Athlon64, ect and overclock and overvolt to the limit - which means lots and and lots of cooling.

Besides, worst case, they can always move into the GPU cooling market. That seems to be booming :) .

Actually, it makes me wonder how long these cards will last given that they draw so much current, and run reasonably hot. The power regulators on these cards must also get quite warm... I know for a fact that many of my stability issues on older VIA (yes, I know...) boards were due to excessive current draw from the AGP slot.

Anyways, I am actually waiting more for Merom. MMmmmm 64-bit Pentium-M class goodness.

Merom is Pentium M class ?? That is like saying a Rolls is Lexus class....

Clock for clock Merom will be around 30% faster than Yonah and Yonah is 15% faster than Dothan.Go figure.
 
So is Intel completely giving up on the current P4 architure? I hope not, it makes me feel good with high Ghz numbers.

Hmm ...well yes.Altough remarkable suited for multimedia tasks , Netburst was defeated by the huge amount of poor code out there...and the heat wall didn't helped either.
Designed to operate at 6-7Ghz in Tejas ( 31 stage pipeline like Prescott ) it died reachibg half of that.

Anyway , Intel designed a new architecture starting with 2000 , from which will see 3 products : Conroe ( desktop ) , Merom ( mobile ) and Woodcrest (servers )

This new architecture takes the best ideeas behind Netburst and Pentium M and it will definetly rock.Launch speed for Conroe is expected to be 2.93Ghz , so that's not slow , in fact it will be equivalent to a 6Ghz Prescott.
