I have used Windows and Linux for years and years. Two weeks ago I purchase a MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, 256mb VRAM, 2Gb RAM..) and I am very displeased with the files sorting feature in finder. In Windows when you select sorting by name all the folders are grouped at the top (in alphabetical order) followed by all the files (also in alphabetical order). I have researched this topic and it seems that thats how its always been.

I am wondering if this is an annoyance to any one else, and if there is possibly some third party soft that can take care of this. Or maybe there is some n ew feature in the updates that I can not find.

Please respond with any comments, suggestions or rants.
 
Yes! What is with that? It is extremely inconvenient having to sift through folders mixed with files. Almost every thing else about Mac OS is in some respect better than in Windows, but this.... I am sure there is some app that should take care of this out there.. Any one got any tips?
 
There are finder replacements / file browsers.

actually, that is exactly what "sort by kind" is doing.

it is alphabetizing the files, but keeping the different types together. so, there are your images in a clump, alphabetized. there are you folders clumped together, alphabetized. then there are your .pdfs... documents... web clippings... urls... etc. all alphabetized and kept together.
 
Finder just sucks. The list view is a little better in Leopard, though, which is a welcome change. It's the first attention the Finder's had in years.
 
Now tell me, did this upset you more then when you realized there was no such thing as cut/paste?

That was the first thing I tried, sort by kind, and the folders are together, the problem is that the files are grouped by kind as well, so all the gif, pdf, rtf are together, I wanted to see, all the Folders grouped and alphabetized, and all the files grouped and alphabetized... like in Windows when you sort by type.

I am not sure what you mean, there is a cut and paste.... "apple key" + "c" is copy, "apple key" + "x" is cut and "apple key" + "v" is paste.... what OS are you speaking of?
 
This is what works for me:

-Put the folder in list view.
-Sort by name twice (click name twice)
-Sort by kind once (click Kind Once)

Then you get all the file types grouped alphabetically in their respective "kind" denominations. Sure, folders arn't at the very top, but at least they're in alpahabetical order.

Haha, no I didn't mean in text files and such. I meant in Finder. Try doing a cut/paste of a file in Finder.
 
I use Pathfinder and it does what you want. It's not free, but I love it.

The weird thing is that when I do that the files and folders that are do not begin with numerical values get sorted but then ones with numerical values (ex: 2007 09 13 - Printer Delivery.jpg, yes I date all my files like that) get sorted in reverse order so they appear like this:

Academic [folder]
Business [folder]
Culture [folder]
Information Technology [folder]
unarchived [folder]
2007 09 13 - Printer Delivery by UPS InfoNotice back.jpg [file]
2007 09 13 - Printer Delivery by UPS InfoNotice front.jpg [file] <--------!!!!!
2007 09 12 - Rogers Promotion on 1Gb micro SD card.bmp [file] <---------!!!!!

You just need to hold down Option while dragging if you want to move files to a different Volume, or just simply drag the files if you want to move to a folder on the current Volume.
