I'd like to flash my msi 5770's to the asus bios. I have a usb drive, formatted, and need to place the asus bios on it. All instructions I can find say to extract the bios, rename it to "something".bin and move it on the drive. My noob dilemma is that the zipped bios opens to "asus unlocked bios.bin" and it is still compressed. I'm unable to extract it. I know this has to be easier than I'm making it.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a program that unzips zip files? If not, try Zip Genius, or one of the other free zip programs you can find on the web.

Are you reading the instructions carefully enough? I hope so because if you mess it up then you will cause yourself a lot of trouble trying to un-brick your card.

You say the instructions are to move the bin file to a usb key, what exactly is the problem? Why do you say the unlocked bin is still compressed? if you've opened the file that the bin file is inside of then you need to select that file and click extract and chose the place to put it.

Some compression applications like winrar will associate themselves with bin files so you can open them as a compressed format, sometimes bin files are images for burning to disc or an extrernal drive, in this case it's probably just your bios file you dont need to extract anything out of the bin image file unless you're SPECIFICALLY told what to do.

Follow the instructions to the letter, they should be pretty clear.

btw is there a website that tells how and the files to use to do this. I just bought a 5770 sapphire like to mess with ocing it using the asus bios.

thanks

This post from guru3d has been reposted in many forums I've been looking at and everyone seems to have no issue with it: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=308556

I did drag the bios over to the flash drive and it appears to be the full 128k and not the compressed 48k so I may be good to go. I'm new to this so there is trepidation and potential loss of $$$ it seems so easy but I'm finding it not quite so.

Can use 7-zip also. The process is simple. Make sure to backup your old bios using GPU-Z or the command for backup with ATI flash... lookup the list of commands. Build a bootable USB jump drive to flash from using the HP utility. Good luck! I have done about 5 of these so far with no problem.

Isn't the new BIOS simply a fix for problems with the display port? Unless you're having issues with it, you might just leave it alone. Having bricked more than one piece of hardware over the years, I avoid bios updates unless they fix my own problem or promise performance increases.

I'm interested in overclocking these cards... the sole reason for flashing the bios. If you follow these threads you'll see it is fairly simple and apparently quite common. As long as the cards are all reference design versions all should be ok. I've never done anything like this before but have always been interested. I'm probably going to go the water cooling route as well after the new year some time so I'm taking baby steps now and trying to learn as much as I can.
