Soooooo... is this repairable?

??

The heat sink seen in the first picture is what got ripped off on accident. I was pulling the power connector into the board while it was installed in the computer and I really put barely any pressure on it and SNAP it ripped off. There are 4 leads on either side and there is a tiny copper plate going from two on one side, to two on the other side. I went and soldered them back together the way I thought they'd go, but when I put the card in and tried to start it, I heard a bzzzz for a split second from my power supply and the computer did not start until I took the card out. So something's messed up... think I can fix it? Anyone know what that part is?

btw it's a powercolor 9800se 256 bit 128mb, only used once then took it out because it didn't accept the softmod...

that sucks, softmod worked for me

RMA it, I say

well normally electronic things dont like to be ran backwards :p (at least nothing Ive ever messed with LOL)
anyways if someone could post a pic of their card perhaps you could get a reference point to help you out some

seems like there would be some kind of chip under a heat sink like that. Maybe the copper plates are really something else and by heating them up to solder them you burned them up...I mean they had a heat sink on there for a reason :D

There IS something that is attached to the bottom of the heatsink, at least I can see it still attached with a glob of epoxy.

What broke off was a transistor, namely Q8 as the silkscreen on the board indicates.

Bad news is this, unless you can find the schematics of that particular card, you're screwed. Even then, after your hack job repair you likely made it worse.

Sorry.

If it isnt a really exotic component you can get it at radio shack.

NOT a problem,, clean the goop and use Litze wire to clean the solder before starting

Q8 is a dual mosfet ST S8DNF3LL (Transistor, MOSFET, Dual N Ch., 30V 8A, .020R, Logic level, Vgs = 16V) from ST Electronics.. same as Q5 and Q9

Maybe try getting a sample from ST

www.mouser.com

69 cents for that part number.

Shipping will cost you alot more

You might want to order some extra transistors just in case
you fail some soldering attempts.

Plan B. Call ATI and ask them how much to repair it ?
This will be the true test of their customer support abilities.

If plan B fails, then spend $5 on the repair attempt.

Plan C. "Buy it now" ATI with missing transistor <-- Ebay :)

didn't your mom ever tell you guys that RMA'ing something that YOU broke was wrong?

that there is an easy re-soldering job, if you are weary of soldering such a small part practice on a junk circuit board with small components on it first THEN go for the card.

also dont heat up the area too much or you may end up damaging other components of the card as well.

Well I resoldered the resistor back in place a little better and it works, to my complete astonishment :) Thanks all...
