Ok, I am building my first computer but it is fraught with problems.... *cries*.
Firstly I got the wrong graphics card, so I have ripped an old ATI Rage Pro out of an old comp, secondly, when I got my CPU wouldnt fit in its socket, so I spent 4 hours bending the pins into place, I managed to slot it into the socket, but hopefully none of the pins are broken :(. When I boot up with all hardware installed, I get no video, and the MSI backplate says it hangs on BIOS start up. I think it could be because of my graphics card, because there has to be a working graphics card before the BIOS initizializes, doesnt there? Any previous experience and advice would be greatly appreciated :(

AMD64 3200+ Winchester
GeForce6600GT (ATI Rage Pro currently)

What?! you bent the pins? why? are you sure you put it in right? never ever ever ever, should you have to bend pins to get it in the socket, never. It should be an easy smooth fit then a clamp down. This is what may be the problem.
 
yeah i had the same problem .. my video wouldn't work so i took out the cpu and some pins were bent ... i fixed it put it back on and it worked ... it's probably the cpu .. check it and NO PINS SHOULD BE BENT
 
It would just fall in the socket the first time, so I took it out and dropped it on the anti static mat, not hard, or from high, but I guess it was enough some of them bend.
 
Im taking it to a comp shop on Friday, building computers = piss easy, but Im not going to risk bending the pins again - Ill just have to leave everything in the case for now :(

That is what I am saying. Even if you got a damaged cpu you should have returned it, not bent the pins back in place.

If you want to hear something scary, when I worked at frys I used to have to bend the pins back on returned proc and resell them. So if you ever buy a oem cpu from frys check those pins ;)

It's stupposed to just fall in. There's a lever to hold it in place.

How do you order a 'wrong' graphics card? You mean it wasn't as powerful as you thought, or what?

CPUs just sink right into the socket without any force. If you have to force it, something is wrong. The pins ought never even be touched.

I dunno. Maybe you didn't do enough homework and research before you ordered everything. Maybe building computers just isn't for you.
 
Is the rage card agp 1x 2x 4x or 8x

I'm pretty sure your new board will take a crap if it's a 1x or 2x if you can even get it to fit in there...Wrong voltages...

You CAN bend pins back, but it's a ROYAL bitch. You'll need a good knife or razer blade to do it. I have yet to not be able to straighten the pins out with my Gerber 10 in 1 tool's knife blade. Just gotta be gentle and have a keen eye for those tiny bastards......GOD to I love LGA 775 CPUs though, no more pending pins.

Use a mechanical pencil. Take the lead out and bend it back with that. If it's a new proc though, ugh, I'd RMA it instantly. I wouldn't have a mulit hundred dollar chip with bent pins.

Yes, if you managed to cram the Rage pro into the AGP slot of most newer mobos, they won't post.
 
You've never seen the horror's I've seen with AGP card in cheap slots and MCA cards crammed into PCI slots...OH the Horror...

This is the second comp Ive built, and my first build was piss easy. I ordered the wrong part because the 6600GT was on special so I clicked "Buy Now" - It only tells you if it is AGP or PCIe in the description. The CPU did fall into the socket, easy and first time, and I know this is what its meant to do, but once It fell in, I took it out to grease it up with AS5. Once I tried to fit it in, no luck :( I will repeat the process today, to see if I can spot any broken pins, its hard to see 1 broken pin in nearly 1000 others.

EDIT: I tried to POST with a nVidia4 MX440 as well, but no luck either, so I figured it wasn't the graphics card.

buy a magnifying glass or hold up the cpu upside down to eye level and look through the rows of pins you will notice if any of them are bent
 
Why did you remove the processor to "grease" it up with AS5? You do not have to spread the stuff around according to their directions. This went out with the PIII's from my understanding. When I did my processor(P4), I simply put a dab the size of a piece of rice as per their instructions with the processor locked into place. Then you put the heatsink on top and very gently rotate it 1 to 2 degrees to help spread the AS and seat the heatsink.

Isn't the process the same for the AMD processors?

And MSI MB's are not known for their quality, performance, or anything else for that matter. Seems people here steer far away from them.

I would RMA the Processor and the MB. If you want stability with features a Gigabyte board might be a good choice. If you want to OC get an Abit or Asus board or DFI

you didn't put the grease on the bottom of the CPU, did you? If so, you=teh winnar

/edit: also, if he F'ed it up, he shouldn't RMA it. That's the price you pay for not knowing what you are doing.
 
Shut up Engine :) the MSI K8N is one of the best performing 939 motherboards that exist, (apart from the sound quality)
Anyway I got it working, fixed the pins, and applied a little pressure when I closed the socket, working perfect now :) Thanks for the helpful, and moreover, the not so helpful comments.
AS5 can be spread on following the sites instructions, but I didnt, and the way I did should give better performace: Put a dollop of AS5 on the CPU, and spread it with a credit card until it covers the whole of the CPU. This will give the greatest coverage of the heatsink, will cover the whole heat spreader and makes the AS5 form the thinnest layer possible.


I really need to chuck that RagePro in the bin though :) Ordered a AGP (was careful this time ;)) 6600GT today, as well as sound card + speakers + headset. Monitor should come on my birthday in 2 weeks - Cant wait to have my first TFT so I can get rid of the beige POS im using right now to set up XP.

EDIT: .... I knew what I was doing the whole time... building computers is piss easy...I was just unlucky.

I am glad you got it working. I know about bad luck, when I was building mine I got a bad stick of ram that caused problems. It can be a PITA.
