My friend has a computer that won't boot. I've tried the basics to get it to boot but it still won't.

After being on for about 5 seconds I get three long system beeps and then nothing. All fans spin up, all the board lights come on but it just doesn't boot.

He doesn't have any documentation that came with it and I tried looking for a manual for the thing on line to see if I can't find out what the system beeps are telling me, but haven't been able to find one.

Thats why I came here, to see if anyone might know where to find that info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

From what I've been able to find, 3 long beeps could be a keyboard error or memory error, depending on who built the computer. But the keyboard error is likely outdated, so my money is on the ram.

Open the computer and get access to the ram slots. If there is more than one stick, try booting with just one stick installed (try each stick solo).

It's been a while since I've troubleshot a computer that didn't work(haven't had any problems with mine in over 2 years), and I forgot the first rule of troubleshooting a computer...check the ram.

It was the RAM. I pulled the sticks out and swapped them around(it's dual channel), and it boots now. He just got done moving so I'm willing to bet one got dislodged.

All is well now. Thanks for the help...can't believe I forgot to check the ram. Computer troubleshooting fail.
