Sony Vaio issues

I recently got my laptop fix for some keyboard issues and I get it back with a SVCHOST error on POST. the laptop was checked out by a sony tech.now it took me 1 month to get my laptopback from the store that sent it out to sony tech. is there any way for me to fix it myself ? without waiting another month . I did a google search and found out that it might either be a sony motherboard issue and/or a microsoft update issue which I believe the tech most likely updated my laptop to the latest update. now with this vaio it never came with a cd instead it has a 'recovery' partition or a 2nd hdd with the windows xp is there any way to boot into the 2nd partition and reformat the laptop??? Help

any suggestions??

wifi, ms slot, with an intel processor
