A company named Target Technology has filed suit against Sony claiming the company’s Blu-ray technology infringes on its patents.

The suit, which names Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Pictures and Sony DADC, claims that products marketed under the Blu-ray name infringe on a patent Target owns for reflective-layer materials in optical discs. The patent addresses what Target called a need for specific types of silver-based alloys with the advantages (but not the price) of gold. According to the patent, the alloys are also more resistant to corrosion than pure silver.

Metal alloys are patentable? Or just the use of anything cheaper than gold in optical media?

...so...they're saying Sony is the only one in the BDA that is doing this? Talk about beating a dog while it's down.

Sony is down slightly off it's 52 week high but they're doing OK. They got a boost right after the news that the PS3 is dragging down the company. Weird. Well not really (gotta understand the market) so they have come down from that, but they're ok.

Gotta love the patent system, be as vague as you possibly can, and then anyone who does anything that could be considered similar.. WAMMO!

yes, specific chemical formulations, and the process to create them, are patentable. dupont chemical lives via such things.

I don't think this is going anywhere. If the suit was filed against ALL Blu-ray partners then I'd be compelled to believe that they have a strong case. However since it only mentions Sony, I think it's more of a "testing the waters" kind of thing.

PS- And yes the patent system is fucked up, I think everybody already knows that.

Like I have said before, when my patent for 1s and 0s goes through, you are all screwed!!! :D
