I just recently bought a SDM-HS94P/S and may have a problem with the one I picked up. I must preface this thread with I am to new to LCD's and have been a diehard fan of CRT for a while. So if this thread is a repeat of another, I apologize (did search for any issues with the SDM-HS94P regarding the backlight).

Is it normal to see the backlight along the top edge of the screen when viewing a black or very dark page? When I played a few widescreen DVD's there was a white halo effect along the top edge of the regular widescreen black bars that are shown. And I am sure I was not smoking anything that might have caused me to see the halo effect. :D

If anyone has experience with either this monitor or a similiar issue, please let me know. Especially since I have the black version on backorder with bestbuy (already has been trhee weeks for $599.00 plus tax minus $100 rebate).

Thanks in advance.

What you’re seeing is edge light leakage. Very few LCD’s have none. Some have very little, I was able to take my monitor apart and fix the issue which is usually the LCD panel being too tight to the front bezel.

Of course in an ideal world there should be none at all, but, well, stuff happens. If that was me and I could see it behind the black of a wide screen DVD I’d be inclined toward an exchange unit. A tiny bit may be acceptable, but not at the expense of your black levels.

Luck

Thanks. I ended up returning the sony LCD to Bestbuy and got a refund. They were out of the 19" and only had the 17". Amazon.com had it for $629 with free shipping so it should be on its way. Thanks again.
