My old sony ps3 died, and I want to salvage its HD. Would this be enough, as far as I can tell via google and by the looks of it, its a sata 2.5 " HD? Can anyone vouch for this product?

I don't think you can. The PS3 HD is definitely a non standard format and cannot be read in any PC I have tried. I have my old PS3 HD in a NexStar SATA to USB2.0 case. You can only reformat it to use the PS3 HD.
 
hmm, I didn't think that was the problem I would run into. So it just doesn't read it, how about linux?
 
Since Laptop SATA drives use standard SATA connectors, hook it up and see what you can do with it first.
 
You can throw any SATA hard drive in there pending the cable is long enough and you can power it up.
 
It just says it is unallocated space. I am sure you could make a image of the drive and take a look, but unless you know something about the PS3 filesystem I don't think you'll be able to pull the data off of it in a usable form.
 
Why not just transfer the HDD to a new PS3? Or look for a program to read it. I'm sure it exists somewhere.
 
PS3 uses a laptop HDD and that product is an enclosure for laptop HDD's. Looks like it will work.
 
I don't really care for the data on it, I have a new ps3 (thank you renters insurance), I just want to make use of this notebook. I'm going to try plugging it in tomorrow to see if I can format it.
 
Oh if you just want to use the drive in a laptop or one of these external cases then you are fine. I thought you wanted to put it in an external drive and copy your old PS3 data to a new drive and that isn't possible. You can though partition and format the drive without any problems.

FYI you can't put the drive into another PS3 to read the data off the drive, IIRC they are keyed to each PS3's serial number. To use the drive in another PS3 you will be forced to format it when you power on the machine.
