So there is a lot of snickering going on over Sony’s Jack Tretton offering an EGM editor $1,200 for any PS3 found on store shelves. Unfortunately for Tretton, you can find PS3s on shelves at many national retailers, so the internet is having a field day with the comments.

If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it.

Why o' why do Sony execs keep saying all these bizarre things?

There would be little to nothing to talk about if it weren't for all these "You will work harder for a PS3..." kind of comments. Kinda sad really. :(

You will notice that Nintendo is smiling, not talking up their product.
I dont even know anybody who has a PS3; and I have a son who's heavily into gaming.
All his friends seem to have 360s from last year or got a Wii for Christmas...........now some of that may have to do with availability???
I just dont understand this statement.
I was in my local WalMart Sunday and there were 6 units on the shelf (ps3) no wiis and about the same stock of 360s.

Sony's Ego is in orbit, and unfortunately for PS3 owners, I believe the PS3 is going to be a rude wake up call, in which Sony is severely humbled.

LMAO the Penny Arcade link was funny!

The executives at SONY better put off buying their "expensive toys" (second, third or fourth homes, yachts, lifetime membership at the Playboy Mansion etc...), until after the final quarter of results come in.

Wonder if the execs will be getting a PS3 as a Christmas bonus this year? :D

The local Best Buy has 30 PS3s sitting on the shelf. I know, I saw them there today in a pile in the middle of the floor. I watched for about 30 min and no one stopped to look at them. So Sony owes me $36,000

Yeah I been at best buy 2 days ago and found 28 PS3's so where is my $33,600? Just as much for 360's and no wii's.

So, Where my money?!

I'm not taking Sony's side, but keep in mind this was in a print magazine - where the issue usually comes out 2 weeks (at least) before its issue month. With that in mind, it would put the ps3 interview before Christmas - when supply was still tight. I still think you could have found a ps3 when the interview happened, but it wouldv'e been more difficult then it is now where you can walk into almost any retail store and see at least a couple collecting dust.

I want this guy to spend a day with me. We will go to many stores and fund my college education and then keep the leftovers!!!!!!!

Did you happen to read the article? :p
It says, with a scan of the mag, that the interview took place in "early January 2007". Then, the mag (EGM) called 18 retailers, and half of them had PS3's in stock, some stores as many as 20 units. Jack Tretton (Sony Guy) tries to cover his ass and take back what he said, and fails.

Penny arcade is great, I love the Wii comment. Even though I don't really want one but if I saw a Wii I'd buy one. Local retailer has sold about 1 PS3 in weeks. They still haven't ordered any to replace it and the Wii still isn't in stock..

haha, where i live, on the same street there a bestbuy, compusa, circuit city, and a huge mall.

you make about $80,000 if you go to all of them. :D

If you took the time to read the link which had a scan of the article you would see the interview was done in January and they even pointed out to the Sony exec that they had called stores in their area and they were in stock.

Honestly, I wish they would just put a gag order on ALL Sony execs....then people like me would have nothing to post. They just feed the negative PR with this stuff.

When an answer like "we are doing our best and proud of our product" would have worked...you get "I'll give you $1200.00 for..." instead. :(

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with the PS3 other than people just can't justify spending that kind of money on one....well, and the crazy things their executives say.

Is it alright if I call this PS3 a failure now or do I need to wait a few more months?

PS3 seems alot like the Sega Saturn was in 95.

Yeah there is............No games and not too many on the horizon. The only one I look forward to is Motorstorm which just keeps getting pushed back. Why would you buy a game thats available on the 360 for the PS3 when it looks better on the 360????

If Sony had some only PS3 titles out that could hold peoples interests it would not be that bad, but they dont as of yet.

The only action my PS3 has been getting is GT HD and some movies. Dont get me wrong...its a capable system with nothing behind it.

It's hard to call a ~$500 machine that has sold well over a million units a failure.

I personally can't decide what to buy. On one hand is the Wii, it's cheap and looks fun. But I just don't see the serious gaming component to it. When Karraker called the Wii an "impulse buy" I know exactly what he meant, despite all the jokes about that comment. I look at the system and I just see another gamecube. Sure, it LOOKS fun, and I bet it will be, but I have a feeling it will get old quickly. On the other hand Wii has Zelda. :)

In the end I might give in and go with a 360, I'd like to give a PS3 a chance, but with Sony doing their best to crap on their customers over the last few months I think I'll pass.

P.S. Sony Owes me $25,200 for the 21 consoles I counted last time I was in a Bestbuy.

Ya the Sony execs can't seem to shut up already.

Very awesome system though. I still don't have one as my roommates 360 is keeping me busy and I am not ready to spend the money yet. But eventually. I have played a few demo displays and had fun.

They owe me 78,000. Shipment of 65 arrived in GA a couple of days ago.

P.S. - I am a sony fan, and I do have a PS3, but let's keep this on the downlow alright..haha....:D

I got my EGM yesterday and read this quote. I couldn't believe what he was saying. I had to show my wife. I saw PS3s on the shelf at target even before Christmas when I was looking for a Wii or a DS Lite.

This is just sad. Up here in Michigan they are rotting on the store shelve. I did not even have to go to an EB or Best Buy to find them. Walmart, Target, and a Meijer all had several in stock. Of course Nintendo has shipped 2x as many units, but I have yet to see a single one in stock. There were more units of the PS3 at Meijer then there were XBOX360 units. They were litterally rotting. I asked one of the guys working back there and he said they only sell a few a week. They had more in the back room. He said few people even play the demo system or ask anything about the system.

I can't think of a worse thing he could have said. It's like he is trying to shoot himself in the foot. Wow.

Theres a good reason Kotaku isnt a valid news source and just a blog about video games and this is it. Not only was that over a month ago but somehow they think an interview where he says the words "YOU" as in "you, the person interviewing me" means "all the morons that read this article" and that its a legally binding contract. Although I guess its a good way for abunch of dumbass kids to waste money on several PS3's and learn a lesson about life.

It was Bill Engval that said that, not Jeff Foxworthy.

since I can't edit, I'll correct my spelling here.

The only reason this is news is because Microsoft and Nintendo are not pulling the same crazy stunts.

Like what the hell? Can't Sony go a SINGLE MONTH without talking SH@# about the other systems, or making bold crazy, easily disprovable claims?

Fact stands, they posted the challenge to the magazine and AT THE TIME the magazine called around and found no less than 20 some systems..

THE ONLY time I recall the PS3 being rare was the time between launch and christmas, after that all the eBay auctions bottomed out and they started popping up on shelves. The only thing hard to find is the controllers it would seem. At least where I am.

Sony's public relations department should all be fired. hell add in thier marketing and logistics guys as well- this is indeed a slow-motion train wreck.

I'm curious, how do you justify this statement?

You talk about a game thats being pushed back and not released for the PS3, but yet you state as if it is a fact that it looks better on the x360?

On a whim I went in to my local North Houston EB Games because I was bored. The odd thing about this store is that it faces south east and gets a lot of sun until about noon. There are four 20g PS3's that are on display in the store that have the box so sun faded that it is almost unreadable.

When I asked if there were actually units in them, the guy behind the counter said yes, and that it takes about a month for things to sun fade in his store.

To quote Highlander.. Sony Style: "It's better to burn out than to fade away."

It would have been awesome if you took at 30 minute video of that and sent it time lapsed to Sony with a bill.
