buying headphones tomorrow from newegg

i have my heart set on the Sony MDR-XD300 because the picture seems to indicate that they have all of the characteristics im looking for.

they should...
cover my ears completely.
isolate noise well.
not require me to fiddle with head adjustments every time i put them on.
sound good.

my questions is, am i missing the point? or will i be a happy person?

i wanted to try Sennheisers because I want to be an audiophille too, and not be a sucker for buying a sony. but the egg doesnt carry Senns that cover my ears for comparable price.

Buying Sennheiser doesn't make you an audiophile...

Just thought I'd add that the impedence in that particular Sony headphone seems pretty high if you're going to rig it to your computer.

"A sucker"???

I bought my V6/7506's for $40. You want to find a better phone for that price, be my guest. Yes, some items from Sony are overpriced, but my phones definitely aren't. Now the V600's? Yes you would be a sucker if you bought that.

ive gotten some very good advices, i thank you guys for that.
i wont lie, im a noob.

i plan to plug this thing into an mp3 player, particularly Creative Zen Nano.

i may want to plug this into the X-Fi, which i will order with the headphones. but probably i will just have my zalmans pluged into the X-Fi since i just cannot reach the back of my rig twice everyday.

so, is high impedence bad for pluging into a computer? how about mp3s?

if you say that buying Senns doesnt make me an audiophile, i will buy the sony without worries.

one more, will you just explain the thing about V6/7506 and V600s? im not trying to argue or anything but just want to know.

Well, high impedance means that you will need a higher voltage output from your jack to produce equally loud sound as with a lower-impedance headphone at a lower setting. However, impedance is also a double-edged sword: Low-impedance headphones require a greater current (amperage) output capacity (and thus greater current draw) than higher-impedance headphones do.

The MDR-XD300, in particular, is not the best value in the MDR-XD### line. That's because that model is stuck between a rock and a hard place - the pricier MDR-XD400 sounds much better than the MDR-XD300, which in turn does not sound all that much better than the cheaper MDR-XD200.

As for the comparison between the MDR-V6/7506 and the MDR-V600, they're both completely different designs. And the sound quality of the MDR-V600 is much, much worse than that of the comparably priced MDR-XD400 and the MDR-V6/7506: The MDR-V600 delivers severely bloated midrange with no low-end extension and muddy, plasticky, shrieky highs, while the MDR-V6/7506 sounds a bit strident but is otherwise fine-sounding.

And what do you know, I registered to head-fi just a week or two earlier, puahaha. What great timing by me.

What Sennheiser's are we talking about here?
I ask because there are a few duds in their product line as well. ;)
(HD500s for example)

any Senns, really.
I was saying that i want to try Senns but the egg doesnt carry one that is comparable to the MDR-XD300.

thanks for more good inputs guys. it amazes me how widely knowledgeble the people at the [H] are.

so sound quality wise MDR XD400 > XD200 > XD300???
even so, the 400 is above my budget and i gotta have that headband. so i will have to go with the worst choice.

I checked out the head-fi.org. great fourms. but i couldnt find anything about the XD's since i couldnt find the search button if there is one.

it seems that i have done enough research before buying.
i just placed the order for an X-Fi an the MDR-XD300.
please feel free to give further inputs, ill try not to get hurt feelings.

I own both the Sony MDR V6 and the Sennheiser HD280s. Get the Sennheisers.

I have a pair of Senn HD280s and Sony V600s. The V600 is a far better set of cans, and I really don't get the hate everyone has for it, nice bass extension, natural open highs, good midrange punch, overall just a great set of headphones.

or what differences do you hear?

that's a first... are you sure you don't have the V6 and not the v600's? hehe.. anyways

"so sound quality wise MDR XD400 > XD200 > XD300???" nononon... xd300>xd200.. it is jsut that it doesn't sound a whole lot better for the extra $$$

Sennheiser HD212 Pro -- I love mine... though I've had a few cable issues (bad solder joints where the plug meets the cord), just so you know.

Closed
Strong bass (I'm a trance guy)
Covers your ears
Detachable cables (for the win)
Modestly priced
Low-impedance (easily driven by my iRiver H10)

Sennheiser unless you enjoy wasting money or like things that suck.

Now now, there are plenty of other good headphone manufacturers out there!
Beyerdynamic
AKG
Etymonic
Shure
Sony (well some of them)
Grado
Ultrasone
Koss

As for the V6/7506 vs HD280 issue: I'd say depends on your music.

I find that for more rap, hiphop, electronica stuff I like the V6's more because of their forward presentation and bass impact. For everything else though its HD280s. HD280s isloate more too if that means anything.

Sony XD series isn't worth the $ in my opinion.

I completely agree. I was just saying Sennheiser is best choice if your only other choice is Sony.

It took me a second to stop reading this as a smiley... too much Instant Messenger. Just add water.

I'd add that a good place to get HD280s is at Guitar Center or equivalent local retailer; the one nearest me has them for $80+tax out the door. About as cheap as I've seen them online, and no shipping time. Unless you count driving there.

At a first listen, the sony's might seem to be better. They seem crisper up top, more alive, and have good punch. After a while they're fatiguing, the treble that originally felt clean and sharp is icy and jagged. Eventually, I get a headache just from listening to them. Truly fatiguing.

On the other hand, the senns start out feeling mushy, recessed, and soft. However, once your hearing adjusts to being able to hear sounds without them being forcefully stabbed into your head, you find a listen that is very, very, very comfortable. I can literally listen to these all day with no ear fatigue. Also, I find them to be more true to what I expect the sound to be like coming from an instrument. With the V6, I feel as if the music has been put through a high contrast filter, great for a quick glance, horrible for the long term.

agrred... I have some sony's I bought from my 1st time visit with my parents to vietnam.. costed 5 bucks and blows away the 150/250 sony phones... anyways.. yes jsut as you descibed.... nice at the beginning... punchy clear.. and now.. and I am not joking around, I have a terrible headache. .. ESPECIALLY with rock.. omg

ok i c thanks for the info

Dont buy those headphones. I made the mistake myself, they are for one huge. Literally the first song i lisatened to they rattled on the major base points at 75% volume. The base is really weak the lows arent that low. i exchanged them for sennhiser px100 the next day and found that the little sennhiser's though lacking in isolation produced better highs' lows and surpriseingly base. Not to mention they are small. if you need somthing for isolation dont buy the px100. but if you need somthing that sounds good than don't buy the crappy sony's.

I like sony but think that their stuff is really fragile.

The Sony V6 / mdr7506 is not fragile at all and would be a good fit for euimin, if they can be found in his price range

Amazon usually has some excellent deals on the Sennheisers.

that's very true, just got some HD 202s from there for 20 each. Normally around 26-30.

I'd say go for Senns.

I wouldn't say "not fragile at all." The earpads split apart pretty quickly.
