Sony MiniDisk compatability with Apple computers

Hey there everyone, I'm a first time poster, long time viewer on the forums. I've never really been intrested in Apple based products until I started college. I started at a good time because they were clearing out the old AMD 2000XP machines and bringing in about 100 new duel 2GHz G5 towers, and once I got on them, I loved it! Using PhotoShop on them was easy, and the filtering and effects were amazingly fast, and I have been wondering whether to buy an Apple or not.

I have ~£600-700 in reserve for a new custom PC but I was wondering if it would be better maybe for an iMac?

But there is a slight setback, I have a Sony MiniDisk recorder/player MZ-NH600 and after much googling I haven't found a decent site for MiniDisk/Mac compatability. Now I really really like this player, regardless of what people say about the SonicStage music manager.

So I have on one hand a PC to my specs with full usage for the MD.

Going completly against the grain, and go for a Mac, with 'maybe' usage for the MD

I thought I'd post here first because all you guys seem to show the best of both worlds!
 
i couldnt get mine to work either so i ebayed it and got my ipod.
im much happier now
 
I havent even tried my minidisc with my mac, but thats probably because i have no use for it after getting my iPod...

think about it this way: the switch may cost a bit extra, but instead of Minidiscs you have playlists =0)
 
Thanks for the help, I previously had an iPod Shuffle(1GB) for my PC but I took it back for a refund, the whole idea of the Shuffle was something whats already in nearly all music players in the past 15 years, I just bought it at the thought of "Woo I have an iPod RESPECT ME!" But then I realised that the Shuffle was a very basic MP3 player that played MP4 files! So I took it back and got a MiniDisk from the SonyCentre, and I've been happy with it ever since, using ATRAC3plus with 64kbit i can get the same quality as the Shuffle at only half the bitrate.

Would it be possible to use the LineIn(Optical) thats on the MD to record from an external sound source(the Mac)?
 
I am pretty sure the iMac has an optical out... a friend of mine has one and uses it for lots of stuff...

he said there is one issue with it: because the optical and analog come through the same jack (idk how that works) it takes a minute for it to switch from one to the other...

but to answer: yes that would work fine, thats how i used to record my MD, except instead of a mac it was my ps2 i used..
 
Apparently higher end Macs can emulate Sonicstage pretty well through VirtualPC these days, perfect for Hi-MD's drm-less *.wav recording (made on unit) uploads for aspiring musiscians. I imagine that with Apple's latest move to Intel may change things in due time, something rumored from the Sony President that was at one of the most recent keynotes.
