Boy, I'm having a field day! more and more of these are popping up! YaY!

Anyways, for video editing, there are your simple programs, and then there are your hard programs. I'll start by stating free, easy to use programs:

Free:

Windows Movie Maker 2 : A nice, simple, easy to use program for windows that is pretty much a drag and drop affair. The bare nessecities are here, and would be great for the every now and then vacation video. This is just a download away from Microsoft's website, so try it out.

Apple iMovie 3 : If you have a Mac, go for this! It's also a simple, easy to use program that lets you trim and edit clips like a pro. Also, it features both a timeline view and a clip-by-clip view of the project. This is usually pre-installed on Apple computers already, but if not, it is part of the iLife package for $50, but also includes Grageband, iPhoto, iTunes, and iDVD.

Suggested Programs:

Pinnacle

Sony Screenblase Movie Studio 3.0 - This is the program I use, and I love it. It's simple, and easy to use.

If you have any other questions, just ask! Hope that helps!

I've used MovieMaker 2 for a few movies, and my son has done 4 school projects with moviemaker 2. So far, we haven't really required anything beyond its capabilities. the only real drawback its that it is only able to handle one additional track over the DV native soundtrack. To get around this, we have resorted to rendering a movie, then loading THAT into moviemaker and putting the second layer of sound on it.

Here's a 50 MB 3 minute sample: http://www.baynefamily.info/movies/WBIII-352nd-big.wmv Its a high bitrate file I was transferring to a friend. It could easily be made smaller with only a minimal loss of quality. (this is not one of the ones we had the soundtrack issue with - those were my kid's school project).

A friend gave me their old version of Pinnacle recently, and while it supports two additional sound tracks, and a SLEW of transitions, I don't like the interface NEARLY as well, and have continued to use MS Moviemaker 2.0

Another program to try is Serif Movie Plus

I've seen it in action, and it looks to have similar capabilities to Pinnacle. I can't really comment on its interface, though.

I just got a jvc mini dv cam and a tripod for it. Its really alot of fun to play around with. Alot different then my parents old school huge VHS cam that I didn't have a working battery for and had to run extension cords where ever I wanted to use it

I've been using Adobe Premiere for a number of years now, 6 or 7 years.
I started with Speed Razor Mach3, but the Effects previews were too slow on the Pentium 200MMX we were using, so I switched to Premiere and have been using it since.

But 600-700 bucks for a home amatuer is a bit much to start out with. :)

i tried MM2, and premier is waaay to hard to start off with as an amiture. $600-700 is alot to start out but u gotta get the new technology, i was gonna buy the mini-dvd ones, but i didnt like the fact of the dvds only holding 30min of video. does anyone know of any good forums??? thx for the replies guyz

For home purposes just use the built in windows movie program. If you attend a university and they have a mass communications program then Im sure they have a G5 somewhere with final cut pro. Adobe Premiere is also great BUT its like 800 $. I've always wanted to try after effects.

For home use though Moviermaker and I-Movie are fine

I've participated in a great media forum for years. It's the World Wide User Groups forum. Just about every program imaginable is there.
