It's funny how Sony acts like 93,000 accounts is no big deal. I'll bet the 93k PSN users that got hacked think this is a big deal. :( At least the company didn't lie about the hack and not tell anyone for weeks like last time.

Less than one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of our PSN, SEN and SOE audience may have been affected. There were approximately 93,000 accounts globally (PSN/SEN: approximately 60,000 accounts; SOE: approximately 33,000) where the attempts succeeded in verifying those accounts’ valid sign-in IDs and passwords, and we have temporarily locked these accounts. Only a small fraction of these 93,000 accounts showed additional activity prior to being locked. We are currently reviewing those accounts for unauthorized access, and will provide more updates as we have them.

Meh, I don't think it's that big of a deal. You guys are really just out to get Sony, aren't ya?

New day.. same news..

It wasn't that big of a deal the last time IMO. This is even less so. They handled it exactly like any company should unlike last time, keeping people in the dark. They locked accounts and let the public know.

Funny how MS has been hacked here lately but no one talks about it. My friend thought it was odd that he somehow bought 4000 MS points. Found out he was hacked he there are 100s out there having the same issue and it's still happening last I heard.

I haven't heard of anyone getting charged anything for being hacked on PSN.

They weren't hacked. It was actually hackers, using thousands of potential account login/pw's they'd gained from elsewhere, trying to steal customer's data again. That's more of a brute force attempt to steal than Sony being hacked since Sony did nothing. It's a case of dumbasses who use the same passwords for sites and their PSN. Sony can't help stupid

It sounds like someone tried to use log-in info from the last major hack. If any of those account owners have not already changed their password, log-in name, and canceled their credit card then asses to them.
Unless I missed something, this is not a "new" hack attempt. Technically its not even a real "hack" attempt

seems more like a group of hackers with 93k accounts ,or the typical phishing compromised account, damn it, Billy! i told you that free viagra offer was a fake! :D

Agree funny that...

I wonder how widespread it is because a few of my friend's accounts, AND MY OWN, were hacked on Xbox a little while ago with purchases for Points also, but that didn't make the news...

And micro$oft did shit about it... I just left my account in lockdown since I don't use my xbox, but it sure was annoying!

Wait..

93,000 is 0.1%?

So, Sony has 93,000,000 PSN accounts?

More than 93 million.

Really? Tell that to me and other PSN users with the outage.

Tell you what? You lost something or had some extra charges to your CC?

The most that happened was PSN was down. Booo whoo, I can't get my BLOPS map pack, yet you could still play it no problem.

I was playing KZ3 with my friends that weekend it went down. I even got some MvsC2 time in.

Well it's a good thing sony had everyone sign that TOS barring them from suing en mass.

I love my PS3. Since the last hack, it is the best dust collector I have ever known. Oh wait, I played ICO the other night.

Good for you. Instead of not having to worry about mommy's credit card, I, and many like me were busy cancelling our credit cards and getting new ones. Just because something didnt affect you personally doesnt mean it didnt have a big effect on others. Dont be so quick to dismiss other's problems.

so I've been reading hardocp for a while but never joined the forums, but this post just irked me. "Sony hacked again" except they werent. Someone/group is just trying a ton of email/password combinations to see if they work on PSN. These combinations were either acquired by hacking another place (my money would be on gawker again) or they are from the last hack, but if thats the case its not again. Either way this is only a lesson to users, change your passwords and don't use the same one across everything.

Well, they wont have to worry about me, period. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. Having to cancel my card and wait yet again for a new one twice in one year due to sony's fuckups was enough for me.

Yea... this isn't really news.

Though I have to say last time, it was news... if for nothing else, but Sony having an incredibly shoddy security, even more so for such a huge corporation. =/

Funny I just called my CC company and just had them watch my account. And just many many people...nothing happened. There are worst things in my adult life to worry about than something that may never happen.

One could argue that the max number of attempted logins should be limited to something below 93,000.

This is mostly the fault of stupid users with weak passwords, but how did a small group of people hit PSN with 93,000 login attempts without anyone noticing? Lots and lots of proxy servers?

Where did you read XBL was hacked? There was a rumor in March, and then a denial in June.

Your friend probably just did something stupid like sign up for a porn site with the same information or some drunk game downloading. By chance, did those "hackers" download Barbie Horse Adventure?

They did notice and made a press release about it. Yeah, the whole 93K login attempts seems like something they should fix.

This is not Sony being hacked. This is two things.

1) Sony being the victims of a brute force attack
2) Sony allowing such a simple thing to even go through

What's happening with Live accounts that have CCs attached is social engineering, and some Xbox reps say it's "jtagged boxes from Eastern Europe". Ask around, you'll find a lot of people with 6k and 4k points card purchases made, and quite often that they've been relocated to Russia or China.

I'm not a Sony fan, but they were not hacked.

These were login attempts made using account data compromised from other sources.

I.e. morons using the same login and password on every site they visit, instead of compartmentalizing important logins from throwaway ones.

There's nothing Sony could have done to pre-emptively prevent this short of implementing a bunch of draconian security restrictions, like locking the account to one system, that the users would have bitched about anyway. You get a botnet rolling their way through a compromised list and they'll find a great number of morons.

Certainly Sony's had some shit security issues, but on this one, they did the right thing. Detect the attempts, lock the accounts, let everyone know whats going down.

I personally haven't heard of any charge to someones credit card confirmed to be related to the PSN outage.

Also, people need to realize that you are more likely to get your credit card number stolen when you buy groceries or get gas. It happens all the time, and its not that big of a deal. I am sick of people complaining about the huge hassle it is if your credit card info is stolen. In reality it takes about 5 minutes on the phone with your bank to get everything resolved. You are only liable for $50 of unauthorized charges and 99% of the time the bank waves that too.

I am not saying Sony isn't at fault for the initial hacking, but I am saying that it was totally blown out of proportion. Worst case scenario for a PSN account holder was a slight inconvenience.

Yes, because we caused this to happen.

No, but you put up a "hacked again" story when the link, and even the small snippet posted show that it wasn't hacked, 93,000 people had the same username and password from another site. All that happened to Sony was someone tried to log in a bunch of usernames with passwords they found and 93,000 of them worked.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the 93,000 people who were stupid enough to use the same password on PSN as any other site a second time after they actually were hacked earlier this year.

Actually, Sony deserves credit for detecting what was happening, taking measures to prevent it, protect compromised accounts and notifying the public.

Xbox Live hacks, are the other hand, have reached epidemic levels and MS is pretending nothing is wrong. It can take a month to get your account restored, and if the hackers change your region MS will tell you you're shit out of luck. It is happening like crazy. I've had my own account compromised, and the only reason I didn't have any fraudulent charges was because my attached credit card didn't have an available balance at the time.

So, we have on the one side the PSN breach that resulted in no fraud, and on the other hand hundreds, if not thousands of people every day having money disappear from their accounts while hackers use your gamertag to play Xbox Live games on their modded systems. Seems like MS is the one with the real security problem right now.
