Sony has finally settled with Immersion making way for Sony to possibly use the rumble feature in future PS3 controllers. Sony will pay about $120 million dollars in damages and licensing fees on top of the $30 million in licensing payments they’ve made so far.

As part of the truce, Sony will pay San Jose-based Immersion $97.2 million in damages and interest, as stipulated in the original court award that Sony was appealing. Sony will also pay $22.5 million in licensing payments through 2009 plus an unspecified amount of fees and royalties. In total, Sony will cough up at least $150.3 million to settle the litigation, when factoring in $30.6 million in compulsory license payments the Japanese company has already paid.

$120 million for a rumble feature... ouch...

Also so they can continue to sell PS2s, so it probably was well worth it.
Now the question is, will they put the rumble feature into the PS3 controller?

They also claimed that motion sensing and rumble couldn't be in the same controller.

They will probably come up with some new claim that they "fixed" the issue with rumble and motion sensing and can now bring both into the same controller.

GT5 with Logitech G25 now please.

While it may be a "lost" cause for rumble on the PS3, I don't miss it much. Knowing Sony, it'll be a new and revolutionary innovation worthy of self declaration of false awards...

Next in the news JT announces that they were first to add motion sensing and rumble and challenge to give a free controller and cash if anyone can find a controller that does that better...

Yeah I just about laughed when they said motion sensing and rumble couldn't be done in the same controller, while this little company called Nintendo could pull it off :p .

For those that say they done miss rumble, have you ever played MGS? I can't help but remember playing it on the PS1 and enjoying the many ways it was used thought the game.

Exactly. I think that was just an excuse. Now that they have the rights to use the rumble feature (MS / Nintendo already paid to use it and the Wii uses both) they should make PS3 controllers with it. God only knows how much they are going to cost though... I can hear Kutaragi already "You will harder for a PS3 remote..."

Most of the big developers for Sony say they missed it. They really really miss rumble. And Kojima of MGS4 says he wishes they had it. MGS4 is a staple of the Sony platform, so I wouldn't quite count out the fact it will be in there before that comes out.

I know absolutely nothing about game programming, but can they add rumble into older games with software updates?

I think think there was ever doubt that it was an excuse as Nintendo had no trouble. They just didn't want to pay the money to Immersion.

"You will harder for a PS3 remote..."

think you left the word work out of there between will and harder.

Yes, I meant..."You will work harder..."

heh, you have to admit making a typo in your post while correcting a typo is funny! :D

Does this "rumble" settlement also incorporate "Force Feedback"

As far as I know, they are different technologies. And I really do NOT want Tilt Turismo 5. I want a proper Force Feedback implementation, like they did for GT4 and the DFP. :D

BTW: :D :D @ the think think. :p

Yeah those are always funny.

I hate it when people try to correct others spelling, grammar, and structures on the internet.

thats really not all that much for such a big company as Sony...i hope they will finally put rumble on the PS3 controller or at least have it possible for games (GT HD comes to mind)

its almost safe to say rumble broke the ps3

because for a 600 cost... people were missing rumble that they could get for $300 or less

Its one of thos efeatures that put you into the game.
