I have a sony 21 inch trinitron tube model E540. I got it around 3 years ago and in the past 6 months its started really screwing up. I can be using it and just totally out of the blue the screen will instantly get extremly blurry and will stay that way untill I turn it off and back on. Sometimes I can go days without it doing it and other times it will do it every 5 minutes. Each time requiring me to power it off then on. Yesterday I took it apart "yes I discharged the tube" and checked to see if I could see any blown components and everything looked good. Reseated all the cables inside of it and retightened all the ground screws. Yet the problem still persist. I love this monitor as its huge and a true flat crt but I cant stand it when Im playing BF2 and everything goes blurry or doing anything. It does it on 1600x1200 and 1024x768. Any ideas on what it may be. Is it time for a new monitor or is there anywhere I can get this repaired. They need to be good though as this problem is very intermitent.
 
I think your CRT is just going, I know my sony died after around that same amount of time, though it just started dimming out.
Maybe you could get it repaired, but the cost probably wouldn't be worth it, you could maybe grab another off of ebay?
 
I sugest you stop thinkering with the crt internal components. Your exposing ur self to radiation and all crt hold about 10lbs of lead. Anywho big screens like that r nice but they go faster. When u said u had it for 3yrs did u get it new then or bought it used? Good luck

Radiation bullshit im not checking the grounds with it turned on. As far as the lead goes im not chewing on it either. Guess I should never go outside either as I may get stung by a bee carrying ebola virus? I bought it new 3 years ago with the expectations it would last me at least 6 years. I should have known better as it is a sony product and most things they make last a year if your lucky. Think im just gonna bite the bullet and buy a lcd probably a dell

Im in no hurry to buy an LCD after my experiance with a Dell 2001FP, It just couldnt compete with my current Sony 21" G520P as a gaming monitor. A lot of my complaints will apply to just about any LCD out at the moment , but I guess it depends how picky you are with image quality.

Unfortunately it wont be easy finding a really good CRT these days unless you buy it refurbished,such as this one.

I currently have 5 Sony displays in my house and all work like new / never been repaired, a 5 year old 27" Wega tv, 6 year old 32" standard(non-flat) tv, 4 yr old 19" G400 PC monitor , A 2 year old 32" Sony HDTV and the 21" G520P im using on this PC ,I gave my mom a 20" Sony TV I bought in 1989(she put it in her room) and it still works to this day and has never been repaired, although the picture quality is showing its age. So I couldnt agree with the "sony product and most things they make last a year if your lucky." ...unless im just really lucky. :)

It wouldnt be a complete post without someone trying to prove me wrong. Congratulations on all your sony expierances being good in my own expierance anything and everything I have ever owned sony has failed on me quickly. But your insight is extremely helpful in helping me realize how wrong I am about my own personal expierance with sony.

Now done with the sarcasm what was your major complaint with the dell 2001fp? I was looking at a 2005 but Im worried I will be disapointed by not having all the advantages that a good CRT has to offer such as no ghosting , no viewing angles, true selectable resolution's I also know that the g520 has been maximum pc best monitor for many years you think I should just buy a refurbed one of those? My e540 is great for gaming but sucks for desktop use.
 
Ahh screw it I think Im going to just order a Dell P1130 aka G520 off ebay. They are all listed for 200 or less and thats much better then dropping 500 bux for inferior technology. Sure LCD physcially shits on crt but I want image quality over asthetics. Maybe after my new Dell P1130 dies hopefully in several years OLED displays will be affordable.
 
lol too bad nothin can last forever. still runnin ti4200 and get decent performance, i notice quality of new technology is lacking. anywho is there such thing as gettin broken pixels on new crt. I am considering upgrading from my 5yr old HP 17in crt (small)

The 2001FP had stellar desktop performance such as browsing the web / forums / chat ,Basicly text on a LCD looks better than any CRT will display but thats the only strong point I could find on it (never actualy had a problem reading text on my crt @ 1600x1200 either), however when I got things going in motion...(games & movies) I then realised the color accuracy , grey scale performance,viewing angle restrictions,response time,motion blur ,contrast ratio & black level performance were all inferior on the 2001fp vs. my CRT. also not being able to change resolutions didnt help.. the 2001FP is 1600x1200 native wich Im used to running on my CRT's desktop res but I like being able to change it depending on wich game im playing, Sure you could choose a lower res but then you lose some image quality and see even more motion blur due to resolution scaling, and when it came to movies the black levels left much desired .. dark scenes looked washed out on the LCD (common complaint on LCDs) , But thats what I get for listening to all the Hype... :rolleyes: I sent the 2001FP back to dell after 3 weeks of running it next to my CRT (Clone mode).

My Digi cam settings werent ideal (color / contrast a bit off) especially in the side by side shot but you can get an idea of the black level differances.

If I were looking for a display for office work then LCD would definately be the way to go.

But for gaming & movies a good trinitron / apreture grille based CRT still offers the best image quality and flexibility. Hopefully by the time this CRT dies a better solution will be available, such as OLED or better yet SED.
 
I have had my Sony trinitron multiscan G400 flat crt for 5 years and its still going strong. Trinitrons are the best tubes you can buy imo. GL in finding a new monitor LCD or CRT.
 
Thanks for takin the comparison pic. And yeah crt deffinately looks way better then lcd. There is tons of listings on ebay for the g520 most offering warrenty 30 days to 3 years so it should be a safe bet. Plus the G520 has much better specs then my E540

Ive always told myself not to order something like a monitor from Ebay but Ive heard this seller is reliable from a couple differant people. Just dont blame me if something horrible goes wrong as ive never ordered from them myself ;) You might skim through his feedback although it looks pretty good to me.
 
Yeah I saw monitormon mentioned in another thread. His feedback is really solid only a few negatives and most of them are from people bitching that he spray paints white monitors black.. Not a issue for me as I will do the same thing.
