Sony Blames "Anonymous"

If it's true, someone should be fired for being stupid.

Any company would be in massive damage control after something bad happens, That's a fact of business and why they hire PR departments. And i'm not excusing it, it shouldn't of happened, i'm not going to jump to conclusions either until I know all the facts of who did it, how they did it, and possibly why they did it. I'm not getting all up in a huff over it either because I know it does happen, hell if I got pissed at anything that got hacked/compromised and refused to use them, I wouldn't be here checking out the [H] either.

PR departments hurt public image more than they help. I'd rather they come out and say, "This is what happened, we messed up, and this is what we're going to do about it", and then follow through on their plan. I'd respect them a lot more if they just man-upped. Then they could forget about paying some fancy "corporate image consultant". Don't act like a giant d-bag and you won't need to have some spin doctor trying to save your image in vain.

Anon? Really Sony? So far they have never once taken vast amounts of user information or cashed in on stolen credit cards. This is just a public cry because Sony got butt hurt by them when Sony had a hard on for Geohotz going to jail.

Chinese/Russian hackers I would guess.

If Sony had some samurais they could dispatch to take care of these self important, entitled, contemptuous 'Anonymous' assholes, the world would be a better place.

Well, except for the part where a corporation is killing people, that's kinda scary. :p

From the article where Sony is quantifying the attack :

"....carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated...."

These are not words I think of when discussing Sony. Summed up: they got outclassed.

FYI, Wired is reporting now that someone left an Anonymous calling card on the SOE servers. Not the PSN servers, but the other hack.

Of course it could be an anonymous person framing an Anonymous person.

Who says they had poor network security? point out to me where it says how exactly they managed to get hacked. The point of my post was that no matter how much security they had in place, if someone was determained enough they could of gotten in.

77 million people might disagree with you, I lean more to they "had poor network security". I think that gamers weren't on their priority list and don't consider gamers important other then their cash cows. I'm sure sony has gigs of data that would be far more interesting to thieves to sell and those vaults haven't been hacked into. . Its all about what is important to a company and what do you spend your resources on. Its pretty obvious where sony put gamers on the list, AT THE BOTTOM.

1. as has been pointed out before, when has anon swiped CC info? it'd be something very new for them and they would pretty much loose all support they may have had by turning themselves into thieves.

2. when has anon ever *not* taken credit for what they have done?

3. so there is a file on the server that points at anon and says we are legion... because yeah.. its a 100% lock that it wasnt left there to point the blame elsewhere so sony can just go digging through garbage piles wasting time looking for invisible boogymen.

just seems way more likely that sony is just looking for a scapegoat for their own lack of IT talent and anon is it.

I remember just a couple weeks ago forum goers here talking about how hackers couldn't touch Sony.

Hope these guys learn.

Or Sony is just making shit up.

or someone was looking to point Sony in the wrong direction. Didn't Sony, just last week, say that they had no reason to believe that anon had anything to do with the theft?

Ok, seriously, treating a random group of fuckheads like anon as though they are group with an actual plan or morals that you know is just stupid.

If the internet had some hero hackers that could fight back against these self-important, entitled, contemptuous "Corporate" assholes and governments, the world would be a better place. Oh wait...
Well, except for the part where the ignorant blame them for everything the corporate and government propagandists say to blame them for, that's more than kinda scary.

Just today i was looking at buying a Sony 3d tv... Cant bring myself to support a company like this though. I hope word gets out to all the masses and ends up rlly hurting their sales.

I really can't help but think of the movie hackers, and the "planted" davinci virus when reading that LOL... Whose the FBI going to trust, us.. or a bunch of punk kids. I created the virus to get access to there hard drives.
If only Sony had gotten a Gibson....
Damn things practically unhackable.

Ok, seriously, treating a random group of fuckheads like anon as though they are group with an actual plan or morals that you know is just stupid.

About as stupid as treating a giant multinational corporation with a poor track record for ethics as though they have actual morals.

This is nothing more than Sony desperately pointing finger and attempting to fling the ball in someone elses' court in order to deflect the incoming class-action lawsuits and criminal investigations. Sony is about to get bent over for this leak. The ID theft alone is going to cost our banks hundreds of millions of dollars.

so basically Sony its admitting to complete incompetency?
why the hell would a dos attack "distract" a security system from detecting a data breech?

Anon as a whole isn't going to suddenly change up their MO. The group itself seems to want people to believe in them and whatever bullshit cause they claim to be going after from one day to the next. That isn't to say some members of Anon didn't do this, but this doesn't fit the style of the group as a whole. Anon is an easy target and a lot of people are willing to believe it was them. Its a very simply way to throw people and criminals use it all the time. If Anon wanted people to know it was them (and if they put that message in Sony's servers they clearly did) they would be jumping up and down trying to claim responsibility. At this point anyone can claim to be Anon and use the name to do whatever they want and no one will know the difference.

I approve this message.

What about all the people SOE has been laying off lately? They closed 3 studios and laid off something like 200 people recently. This is just a stretch but maaaybe one of those people might have gotten a little pissed and had some access to the servers?

this isnt really Anon's MO... they tend to DDoS stuff, or change your webpage telling the world youve been bad, and stealing data seems to be alot more sophisticated than id credit Anon for.

However, Sony using poor IT security practises, is the norm it seems

Wow. What has been up with Sony lately. Sony used to be my favorite, now not so much.

Had you been paying attention to Sony in the last few years... you'd realise that all of this is actually par for the course. They shut down a gamer favourite just because the shop was importing consoles from another country.

Lik Sang said:
Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

Yes. According to Sony... reselling PSPs was a violation of its trademarks and copyrights.

Anon as a whole dont fucking exist. Its whatever group of 4channers are using the name at the time.

Way to be wrong again Sony. This just flat out isn't Anom's MO. Now because you guys can't figure out who did it why not go for the easiest target. Great investigation!!

I'm going to have to agree with Disposed here fellas. Anonymous doesn't have a MO, they're a group of random internet fucktards and trolls doing whatever they can, for the LOLs... Hell, they barely deserve to be called a "group" at all.

Now, I strongly doubt that Anonymous was responsible for this, but it may very well have been a member of Anonymous. However, this is a major bit of misdirection from Sony. How about rather than telling us that Anonymous did it, they tell us that they've evidence pointing towards the criminals involved and they've turned their logs over to law enforcement for further investigation? Then if it comes out that the morons involved were part of Anonymous, (if that's even possible) they can say, "Joe Smith, who is loosely aligned with the hacker group Anonymous..."

(Not that I think most members of Anonymous are anything more than script kiddies... or a group, but you know the media.)

*As a side note, my several year personal refusal to buy any Sony products continues. It takes work, Sony owns so many brands I have to do some research before I buy anything. The only one I'm not 100% on for several years has been the occasional movie ticket.

Why would Sony's defense team have anything to do with their IT/security team? What a bunch of crap Sony. Your security measures are what failed here, not your people being distracted.

Sony security sounds like it sucks!

The PS3, and most likely the PS2 and PS1 have been designed by garage type engineers. Plenty Smart, but not that concerned with security.

My company (top 5 airline) updates everything every quarter, very controlled access to the outside on a network that is in over 300 locations world wide.

Sony really needs to get slammed for this one. Any the funny bit, is I'll bet some of Sony's security experts were warning the PS division of all these holes.
