Look at this guys update 4 wu's 57,000 points. how do i get some of those?
 
yes those are called bigadv work units, fold with your i7 cpu and if you finish the work unit on time you get a bonus. The current WU on my i7 would give me 25,404 pts once its done tomorrow
 
i5s are indeed no go. You need 8 cores minimum, which means dual CPUs or an i7 with Hyperthreading.
 
What's the most affordable i7 that can hit ~4Ghz reliably? I think if you are near that frequency, then you should be able to complete the -bigadv WUs and receive the bonus points. I haven't looked into single-socket setups in a very long time and wondered if anyone knows.
 
If you live near a Microcenter store, you can get an i7 920 for $200. 1366 socket boards/i7s are usually better for OCing too as I've seen someone in another thread post about 1156 boards cooking their sockets and the procs attached to them when OCing and upping the voltage. You can get a 1366 board for about the same price as a 1156 board too (or cheaper if you get one off the FS forum like I did). Plus you're gonna need a minimum of 6GBs RAM to run -bigadv WUs efficiently so you might as well have a board that's made to run 2x 3GB sticks in triple channel mode.

So IMO, I'd say just get an i7 920 if possible if you really want to get serious about it.

Why not a i7-860 on a 1156 board? 2.8 to start should be able to hit 4.0 with aftermarket heatsink.
8gb of ram is ideal for big-adv and Vista or W7. (5gb for smp.3gb for OS)
Evga boards don't use the Foxconn problematic socket.

get the i7 860.. its faster then the 920 at stock and overclocks higher then the 920 at the same voltage settings..
 
But which socket is going to be more future proof? Don't the 6 cores only come out for 13xx socket?

AFAIK, Core i9 (Gulftown) will be LGA 1366. Don't know if this architecture will eventually migrate to other sockets.

correct it will be LGA-1366.. i dont see it going to LGA-1156 any time soon if at all.. but we will probably see the current lot of lga-1366 i7's released for 1156 once the i9's out..

Don't feel bad man, I'm just relearning all of this stuff again too. Us "old folks" who just did plain old Folding have some catching up to do on how they've changed the Folding clients and its effect on output. :)



I'm running an i7 860 (1156) at 3.3 with stock voltage and don't feel like risking higher voltages with the potential socket issue. If I was doing it all over again I'd go for a 1366 based platform. But hindsight is 20/20. I should complete my first bigadv this afternoon and just come under the deadline to see a bonus point from it. I used notfred VM for a while not understanding it could not pull down a big adv, a little time lost but the folks here set me straight.

Sorry to ruin your day lehmann, but when it posted the 57,000 to me, it sure made mine. That was my first bigadv work unit. As the time to complete dragged on, I was almost starting to wonder if it is worth it, it is.

Fold bigadv if you can get in under the deadline. I don't know about other sockets and how those cpu's stack up, but my 920 is clocked at 3.8 with hyperthreading for 8 cores total, and with a slow dsl connection, I am just making the deadline.

Let me encourage anyone with enough cpu horsepower to fold bigadv.

Nice to know I am on someone's threat list. I hear the sound of mower blades clashing behind me as tjmagneto and Mikey976 come roaring up behind me. I was gonna go bigadv anyway, but perhaps it will help hold them off. some.

Oh well, I guess I deserve to be mowed, I have mowed a few. Just glad to be folding for the [H]orde.

Thanks for confirming this. Just as I suspected, it seems the threshold to make the -bigadv bonus deadline with a single socket is just under 4GHz.
 
I went 68 hours on the unit (i7 860 @ 3.3ghz) and made just over 51K in points. :)

What's "funny" is after the unit completed the box just sat there for about 35 minutes, seemingly doing nothing (although I know it's doing something) then when it started uploading the unit that only took about roughly 6 minutes. But then I have a pretty quick up pipe (15mbps).

Smiles as he looks at his computer. :D I'm running in autopilot with bigadv and both of my 275s churning away.

It takes a loooong time once the unit is done. My log reported that it was 58 min from unit completion to Entering M.D. for the next one.

bigadv work-units are ~95Mb upload size.
That about double a standard SMP work-unit.

The delay before it uploads is caused by the client cleaning up the old work files.
The work around for it is to run the work folder from a ram drive.
