Sometimes when I plug in a usb device, it doesn't matter what is is (a smart phone, mp3 player, hard drive, whatever), my computer hard resets. Why does it do this?

Thanks.

I have to ask, it happens with every USB port? Case USB ports and/or Motherboard Rear USB ports?.. i've seen some short-circuits in USB that just make the machine to fully turn off and/or restart randomly.

Araxie is probably right.

I had a laptop that did this a few years ago. It was indeed a USB short-circuit. The motherboard somehow protected itself by shutting power off, thus rebooting or completly shutting down the computer. Did this with ANY USB device I plugged in. Check visually your port. Might have some misplaced pins in it.

Mine had some of the power pin touching each other when they shouldn't have. Had to block access to that port.

Good luck

I can confirm. Had a case with one port with bent pins that was causing this.

I had this problem with my 2500K system, but it was not a port short afaik. It was any usb3 port whether on the front of the machine, back of the machine, or by external usb3 hub.

yeah that's why that's the first thing I asked for... because if its happening in all USB ports, then the issue could be directly the mobo or CPU, which normally its just a matter of couple of bent pins.

It's just in the front USB ports. So far as I know. It's random and it's never happened in the back ports. The back ports are directly soldered onto the motherboard, while the front ports are connected via a wire to the case.

That's probably the case.

Those case connections can sometimes be dodgy. I don't know that you will be able to fix that if it passes a visual inspection.

yeah take a good look at the connection. sometimes those connectors have the ability to be put on upside down. Even more room for error if they arent a single block but rather separate wires.

If it is USB 2.0 the good thing is that most modern motherboards have multiple headers. Pull the connector off and have a look at it as well as the motherboard header. Swap the connector to another header and see if the issue persists.
