Something wrong with the southbridge?

Main drive with OS is seagate 500G SATA drive

2nd drive is ATA maxtor 80G drive

running hd tune, the 500g seagate is running well, but the 80G maxtor is about 1/2 as fast. the slowest speed for the maxtor is about 1.5 Mb/sec. the slowest for the seagate is about 60 MB/sec

The problem is that not much is happening on the main seagate drive. i am only surfing with it. the maxtor drive has edonkey running in the background.

When I go to windows explorer on the seagate, sometimes it takes a few secs just to get to the directory. When I open control panel, it may take 5 secs even when i am not running any program other than edonkey on the other drive. The seagate was making a lot of noise a few days ago. The noise went away. Is the problem with the hardrive (Seems fine really) or is there something wrong with the southbridge? i.e., the southbridge is causing the delay because the ATA harddrive is working too hard? is there something wrong with the ATA driver? it is running ultra DMA mode and i don't see any problems with it at all.
 
can you lock pci at 33? it might be set to that normally. have you tried fiddling with pcie freq? try 105.

does it happen at stock speed?

does emule have to hash all files before sharing? if it's hashing, that'd explain why it's so bogged.

ide isn't handled directly by the sb, although the jmicron and all other pci/pcie go through it iirc.

I'd be doubting the jmicron more if anything. try a different ide cable? probably not it if you're running in udma. that said, udma5/6? or 2?

i also suspect the jmicron chip or the way it interacts with the southbridge

the only way i can be sure is to get another SATA drive and put the PATA drive to rest, but that won't happen until next year
 
try a different ide cable still maybe. you didn't install the jmicron drivers right? it should be just fine in ide mode or whatever and whatever standard drivers windows puts on. I ran and am still running an old 200gb seagate ide on my jmicron without issue.
 
I installed the Gigabyte drivers because forum members warned me not to use the jmicron drivers and not to update from windows.

The slowdown does not happen all the time. it is on and off

I am going to run a few tests over the next few weeks and observe the behaviour.
1. run at stock for awhile until the problem shows up consistently again
2. disable AHCI at the jmicron ports from the BIOS.
3. lock the pcie at 101, 102,.... try a few settings
