Something weird happened today

I was overclocking my Prescott 3.0ghz as high as I could with a zalman 9500. I reached 4.2ghz then my computer restarted. I went into the bios and reset the voltages and clocks to default and restarted.

It started up fine but when I reached the desktop my screen went blank and the fan on my videocard (x850xt) started spinning at 100%. When the screen came back, the fan on my videocard COMPLETELY stopped and started making a loud whining noise. When I checked the temps (mind you I didn't know the fan had completely stopped at this point) of the card it was at 90c and rising. When it reached 99c the whining stopped and the fan started spinning again. when the temps went down to under 96c the fan completely stopped again until the temp reached 99c again and the process repeated.

I tried restarting my computer multiple times, I tried cleaning it, and I tried removing the hsf and re-applying thermal, but it still was doing what I said above. I was just about to replace the fan when I decided to try one last thing. I forced the card fan to run at 100% all the time and left it like that for about 7 minutes, then I restarted. After that, everything worked fine again...

Does anyone know what happened or has had something like this happen before?
 
Ive had a few desk fans at my desk at work die on me. Usually the first sign is when you turn it on low you hear the motor trying to work but see no spinning (the whine you may be refering too). When you put it on high its enough to get it spinning, and once its spinning everythings good to go (once your videocard hits a certain spot it makes sense for it to spin at full throttle, when normally it may not).

So chances are the fan on your videocard is going, and you may want to get a replacement before something really bad happends.

I hope you turned on the AGP/PCI Lock on your motherboard cause you may have thrown a voltage surge into you AGP/PCI videocard that caused this scenerio in the first place. All you can really do is guess, but IM pretty sure the fan on the cards not gonna hold up.

I always have the PCIe lock on so I don't think it was that.

I thought that maybe the fan was dying at first, but then I wasn't sure since the fan worked fine running at low speeds while windows started up or while I was in the bios. It only stopped working the instant I reached the desktop.

Oh well. I was going to get a new fan for it eventually anyway so I will. Any suggestions for videocard hsf?

No. That one is overrated and isn't that great at the price range. A VF-700Cu would do just fine. I'm even fine with my stock heatsink on my X850XT and it idles at 35c and loads 61. I've got a VF700cu on my 9800P and it idles at 31c and loads 41 or 42, and that is on a 150nm GPU. Reason I said this is because I speak from experience. I put on a VF900 on a friend's X1800XT, and it pretty much didn't give us satisfactory results. The house even had AC on.
 
HAahahaha, my Asus X800XT-PE fan and leds stopped working too, I reached 65 c all the time. But I could play any game, css, doom, and it was ok. Of course I sent the card back, knowing that one day it would stop working, but damn that was hardcore, no fan and working well at 100%.
 
Try checking it out with ATI Tool.
Once during an OC session I had a reboot that caused my set points on my X850XT-PE to be reset to some insane high level of 90c for 5% fan speed.
 
Nah the fan and the leds just fucked up big time. If you were talking to me...
 
Magnifico, it's been like 4 months I think and my new X800XT-PE's fan already stopped working, the leds don't work too, great. A new RMA, in the best case they might send me a more recent card, like x1800.
