Just finished building my new system but i'm having trouble with the bios setup (first time). I currently have a cdrw, floppy and 2 hd's one sata and the other is using a converter so both sata drives. However the bios autodetect comes up wioth this:

Primary IDE Master: [LITE-ON COMBO SOHC]
Primary IDE Slave: [Not Detected]
Secondary IDE Master: [Not Detected]
Secondary IDE Slave: [Not Detected]
Third IDE Master: [Not Detected]
Fourth IDE Master" [WDC WD740GB-32FLA0]

For some reason its detecting the SATA drives as the fourth IDE? And the drive it recognizes is the actual Raptor SATA, not the one with a converter. Ideas?

Looks like you need to unplug your CD-Rom and hook up your HDD. CD-Rom shouldn't be the primary boot.

I'm not knowledgeable on sata, maybe they work differently than ata. Just looks to me the cables are in the wrong places, hehe.

If it's your first time booting up and you haven't installed the OS, I'd unplug everything you don't need and then go from there... Ie only have one hdd connected, no cdrom or floppy, should make it easier to figure out what's going on , and then you can hook up the other components later. And just make sure you're cables are correct.

RTFM and make sure you have the correct settings for using SATA drives

and why are you using a converter on your ATA drive?

stumpy, i am sure that he needs a CD rom to load an OS on... but good call.

sata is on it's own ide controller, so the drive will post as master, try swapping the two to see if it switches. Also, if you can't see hte one with the sata converter, try connecing it on regular pata cable instead, maybe the converter is crap.

check your jumpers, make sure there are no Cable Select and Master\Slave on the same cable, make sure there is no Master with slave present when there isnt, or a sslave present when a HDD is set to Single
make sure all Masters are at the end of the cable, and that no slave is present without a master

BIOS > PNP / PCI submenu > Force Update ESCD (Extended System Configuration Data)
(typically, if available, will refresh the complete sys config, including the IDE channels event though its specifically for PNP devices)
might be disguised as a different name

there will be a bus manager option of some sort, they vary quite a bit
Enhanced Mode > PATA + SATA under IDE Configuration is selected AND that IDE Bus Master is selected (which is for a P4C800, yours will likely vary)

to boot to the SATA > BIOS boot order > SATA if available otherwise > SCSI

read the manual carefully regarding all the BIOS options, first thing I do after checking a board for damage in shipping

as mentioned, simplifying the config is really a good idea at this point

it can get rather confusing considereing BIOS and OS scan orders and letter assignments
not to mention where the system partition get written and any dual boots

basic scan order of the OS (to assign letters)

-- Primary Master primary partition
-- Primary Slave primary partition
-- Secondary Master primary partition
-- Secondary Slave primary partition
-- Primary Master extended partition with logical drives
-- Primary Slave extended partition with logical drives
-- Secondary Master extended partition with logical drives
-- Secondary Slave extended partition with logical drives
-- Removable media (CD-ROM) or other software driven devices with drive letters

doesnt address SATA at all, nor the fact your allowed either 4 primary partitions or 3 primary and one extended partition with its own logical drives, per HDD
first part (4 entries) should mimic the scan order of the BIOS for the system partition
the bus manager SATA option altering that scan order along with the BIOS boot order selection (HDD0 HDD1 HDD2 SCSI ect)
