something odd just happened when shutting down pc...

Hello,

I just formatted my pc and reinstalled windows xp, I updated it and everything...a few mins ago I turned off my pc and I noticed win xp started installing updates, however when it finished and said Windows is shutting down, everything in my pc shutdown except the fans, which were on for another 10 secs or so... The screen blacked out and I heard the hard drive heads park, but I could still hear the fans on the case running...like I said, they were on for another 10 secs or so.

I have not been having trouble with this pc at all, im just wondering if its something I should be concerned about.

by the way, I shut it down again a few times and its not happening anymore...

edit: It just did it again...but once again it was only after installing another update :confused: oh and this time I looked through the case window and I saw the mobo still on...looks like its shutting the harddrives early or something...

Ive never had this happen before but Ive also never seen win xp installing so many updates after shutdown...
 
Your CPU doesn't cool off instantly, so running the fan a bit after "shutdown" is not a bad thing. I've heard of other computers doing this even though I've never experienced it myself. If my computer did it, I'd be pleased :)
 
I had an Abit of that era that exhibited occasional errors and oddities. Eventually that PC died horribly (though I can't say whether it was or was not the Abit that was guilty), both hard drives were fried and the motherboard didn't boot anymore (though it still passed through *plenty* of electricity).
 
I'd be wary of it.... just keep an eye on it. In my opinion its never good to have power surging into components after the PC is supposedly off.
 
Ok guys, since im in finals and i CANT lose my computer i went ahead and got a new mobo (gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L) and a new PSU (Corsair vx550).....

guess what, IT STILL DID IT....

I checked the error log and just before shutdown there was a DHCP error from a wireless network card I just installed....its the only thing that comes to mind that could be the problem...

any ideas? :S

I only have 1 ide cd rom drive (which is crapping out cause its tray gets stuck sometimes) and 3 WD hard drives, which work perfectly...
 
What does the PC do when shut down from safe mode? Safe mode +networking?
Have you disconnected everything except for the main drive, including unnecessary cards?

If that will take too much time in your finals' schedule, just disable that network card in Device manager and see how it works.
 
Well just done running memtest and orthos...no errors there, I just wanted to make sure it wasnt the ram or processor...

Gonna try disconnecting that network card, its a dlink 542, I bought it because it was on sale at circuit city, now that I look for reviews for that specific card most of them are bad...

Since its so random Its hard to know when its gonna happen so I dont know if it happens in safe mode...
 
It's more useful to just disable/remove that card and its drivers before trying things out in Safe Mode, since it's already a suspect.
