I have a 160gig as my main OS drive.
About 2 hours ago it was at aprox. 128gig free.
Now there are only 80gig free.

I have done nothing aside from downloading some torrents and emptying my trash and norton protected files.
And deleted about 2 gig of porn.

I have no idea what happened, please help.

browse folder by folder checking the properties of them to see what is using that space up. Make sure you set your options to see all hidden files.

You might also want to do a search for files created or changed in the last day.

Could be a problem with norton protection. It once stole 17 gigs off my firewire drive, and its near impossible to tell where they've gone.

Run this command in a shell:

del \\?\c:\recycler\nprotect\*.*

if you have more than one hard drive, change the c: to {d-z} as appropriate.

Is norton known for just.. devouring hard drive space? What is it doing thats creating all that garbage?

it's "reserving" that space for itself.

right click your recylclebin, and check "norton protected files"... set it to use like 2% (not 15% or whatever it just "takes")...

there are a few other things, too... windows itself tries to take a big slice of every new drive (under recycle bin properties, too). system restore uses big chunks, too...

...and to think i was bold enough to think that stuff put in the garbage is actually delete-able...

I found it.

Damn torrents finished and cleared and didn't tell me.

Thanks for the info.
Gonna save it for future referance.

eek... I just ran that command and it deleted 30+ gigs off of two drives even tho I have norton protect set to 0%!!! EVIL!

It could be worse, I once uninstalled Norton's altogether, and it took drive space with it. Fortunately, it was on a data drive. I backed it up and did a quick format. I've used no Symantec program since, except Ghost.
