ok, something is going on with my setup and i dont know what.. i just installed a new watercooled setup, with cpublock, bay res, 2 rads.. i was getting readings from everest at 97f idle.. well today im getting a reading of 115f idle. i checked the flow and thats fine. no air in system, and the block is seated well on the cpu. when i feel the hoses/water, block, its cool. its not warm at all.. any idea what the heck is going on here?

i've got an abit nf7s v2.0 mobo, barton 2800 core oc 196x11 1.85v.. ?
 
Well, maybe your temp sensor isn't working very well. After I installed my WC setup, my sensor read a constant -25c for the cpu. I RMA'd the board mind you. Also, did you leave the setup on all night? Maybe the water heated up a bit. What pieces are you using for your wc loop? Pump, block, rad etc. and in what order (not that it makes a huge difference)
 
That does seem a little warm for water cooling indeed. What does it say in the BIOS in regards to temps? It is possible that your board has a bad temp sensor. Do you have anything plugged into the CPU Fan header?
 
ok, i figured out part of the problem... prime was running a torture test in the background that i didnt notice. but even still, things don't seem normal. something is wrong. this is my setup.

cpu block, asetek antarctica with custom 1/2inch barbs.
bay res
2 black ice xtreme 1 radiators with 70cfm thermaltake 120mm fans
dangerden csp-mag pump

whole system using 1/2 id tubing.

loop goes.. pump > cpu > 2 out to bay res > radiator > radiator > pump

i'll let my computer sit for a night or whatever, so the water should be cooled back down to room temp. anyway, when i start my computer up, i get temp readings in windows through everest, at like 92-94f. this is after like 30 seconds. yesterday i was getting idle temps of 97-99f and right now, after running for 30 minutes im getting temps of 108f. my motherboard also reads high at 82f and i dont think i've ever seen it that high before. even when i restart and look in my bios, temps are high. maybe a few degrees cooler, but probably because there is less load then while in windows. i just reseated my block and looked for errors, but i cant find any. pump working fine, block seated correctly and with enough pressure.. i dunno, could be faulty motherboard. its an abit nf7-s. there is nothing plug into the cpu fan on the mobo, only thing plugged in is the psu fan speed monitor

i have a enermax noisetaker 420 psu.

does anyone know where the temp sensor is on the nf7-s.. is it directly under the cpu? i see something there that looks like a sensor.

the thing is, my water temp is cold. ill try to find something to get a reading. damnit
 
My waterblock is cool on full load, nothing odd about that... it's the water taking the heat away.
 
Is the temperature reading from the internal cpu temp sensor? could excess Artic Silver be causing a problem on the surface of the chip? theres not a ton of it, i mean theres just a faded area around the chip where you can see artic silver has gotten into..
 
Your post mistakenly called 115F idle when there was a prime torture test running. If it's only 115 when priming with that much volts are you sure it's not about right? That is a less than 20C rise above ambient with a loaded and heavily overvolted CPU. Maybe a little high, but if everything else is good then re-seat the CPU block and try again.


*** Do you have any cooling in the case other than the PSU and the H2O rig? If your motherboard temps are near 100F, the case cooling may be contributing to higher CPU temps even using H2O. Not a ton higher, but maybe a factor.
 
yeah, i noticed after i made the post about prime... but i've ran prime before with only a 5-7 degree f increase in temps.
i've got 2 80mm exhaust fans in the back, 120mm intake in the front, and a 80mm air hole in the side. fan on the northbridge.
 
ok.. so i took my computer over to my bros to play some games friday night.. temperature still reading the same as it was at home. came home the next day and while bringing my computer inside, it slipped out of the case holder i have and hit the ground a little bit.. not very hard but just a little wack. anyway, i put it in my room and left out of town for the day/night.

i get back home today and i set my computer back up. boot it up, everything is fine. everest pops up and its reading low temps on boot... like 70f. now things are looking more normal. it slowly rises over a period of about 2 hours, and its running at 31c/88f while doing some mild browsing and whatnot. case fans are only set on medium, and still running 195 x 11 at 1.85v. the motherboard temps seem the same as they were a few days ago, hovering around the upper 70s with ambient temp around 70.

this seems more realistic now with the cpu temps and the setup that i have.. was it the small drop that knocked some sense into my computer or what.. artic silver settling in? maybe, but to lower it 12 degrees.. i dunno. it had already been running 6 days prior to the weekend.

well im stumped, but at least things seem normal now.
 
welp, go figure, its different again.. after my earlier post, my computer was up until now. i was messing with some settings so i needed to restart. upon restarting, i decided to check the bios temp readings to see if it was the same as in windows. before rebooting temps were staying steady at 86f and up to 89 90f when running 3dmark03. anyway, sure enough, the bios read back to 100f and now in windows everest is reporting 100f again.. this sucks, what the hell is going on.
 
If rebooting messes up your temps, I'd say that it's the sensor. Do you have an external way to check temps? No matter what, this is only a mild annoyance at worst since even your possibly erroneous high temps are still well within the alright zone.
 
Athlon XP's don't have on Die temperature reading so the temperature your getting is from the diode underneath your CPU. As your CPU heats up the air in the socket, the DIODE temperature goes up. In any case there is no way to prevent this from happening.

I used to have an Athlon XP system and I found as long as its stable and your block is cool, the watercooling is doing its job. You'll never really know whether its 100% working.

The worst for me was I used to use a SLK800A with a 92mm Panaflo so there was a lot of overhang. This caused the air around the socket to circulate a lot causing the temperatures there to be a little lower. This made my temps higher when I was watercooling than when I was air cooling.

Bottom line, don't worry about it.
