i have a g7n400 gigabyte board, i have one serial ata drive and it wont recognize it when i try to install windows, anyone know the right settings??
 
You have to find the manufacturer of the sata chip on your board and you should go to their site and find the drivers for when you install windows. If you need any help e-mail me at Dan.Cape@gmail.com

you may have already done this... but did you check to make sure the jumper is on slave or master? master=if the sata is your primary drive, slave if it is not. or you could just put cable select, but sometimes taht is unreliable. :)

Edit: ok so i am a big dummy. no harm in furthering this, so: what is the dif btw SATA and reg IDE? Aside from the connectors...
 
get the drivers (usualy at the site for your mobo) and hit f6 when prompted at the begining of the installation
 
Don't touch the jumpers on SATA drives, they have nothing at all to do with master/slave configuration.

The first poster was right. Make sure you have the correct drivers for the controller and have them ready for the windows installer when it asks for them.

(been a while since I worked with SATA, not sure about this step)
You will probably also have to define the drive in the sata bios before you can load an OS onto the drive.
