Some x800gto's unlock

Well they use the R420 core, not the R480, so you're only guaranteed an X800XL. Not an X850XT.
No the x800xl use the R430 core. The R423 was the x800xt. and the r480 core was the x850xt.
The connect3d at newegg is $185. At that price I might have to try my luck with this card and the mod. Even if the pipes don't unlock its still a great card for the money.

As I understand it, R420 = X800 Pro/XT AGP, R423 = X800 Pro/XT PCI-E, R430 = X800 NP/XL PCI-E, and R480 = X850. Since these are R423 dies, you should be able to get ~500MHz out of them, maybe a little more. You may also be able to get 16 pipes out of them

The connect3d cards only have 2.0 ns memory vs. 1.6ns from Sapphire. I am going to hold out for a Sapphire GTO2.

Ya, but as of right now comparing prices at newegg there is a $66 difference ($183 vs $249) . I am not sure $66 is worth a less then 10% difference assuming the connect3d unlocks correctly and gets a core of ~500mhz.

True, but I ordered mine at the $220 range, and am still waiting for it to be delivered. If my order gets canceled, I may be back to getting a 7800GT.

Apparently ALL R423 cored GTOs unlock, but as they are in extremely short supply, Connect3D is the only one offering them consistently.

will card unlock? does anyone have any experience with this particular card?
Nope. Won't happen with any reasonable consistency. Like I said, you need a GTO2 from Sapphire, or an R423 core.
