Some strange problems with DVD/CD-RW drives

A few days ago I was updating the drivers for my DVD-burner and the computer froze. I let it sit for an hour just in case it was doing something. But there was no change after an hour. So I turned the computer off. Then on turning it back on it wouldnt reconize anything like it said i didnt have a HD a DVD drive nothing. But after hours of trying to figure it out I decided to put my old CD-RW drive back in and it worked perfectly. Well still doenst work when I try to attach the DVD burner. But now the computer wont let me burn just normal CDs. It locks up every time. I am running winXP pro just to let you all know. So if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
 
Sounds definetly like a driver issue, I would start clean and remove both the cd-burner and the dvd-burner, then reinstall the dvd-burner with generic drivers.
 
well it wont let me even boot the computer up with the DVD-burner attached. And that is the only way I can install or remove the drivers for it unless its connected. And about the not being able to burn with my CD-RW i think it might be the type of disks i have. Any more suggestions?
 
I'm assuming this is an external drive? I say thsi ebcause there are no "drivers" to install for an internal drive. If it is an internal, check your jumper settings and the quality of the cable.
 
funny thing is it is an internal drive and it has drivers. Its a cheap brand. So im just giving up on it lol. But i did find the problem with the CD-RW too. I was trying to burn faster than the CDs were capible. And the program I was using would have an error and just lock up instead of telling me the problem.

It's still crazy. It's an IDE drive...don't load "drivers" for it. They absolutely aren't needed. If you do install them, I would start to blame them for your problems.
 
I would definetly check the ide cable, and jumpers. Sometimes certian drive combinations dont work, and you have to switch the slave and master. But if it worked before you installed the new drivers or whichever new software that could have been installed I would definetly leans towards it being a software problem that can be fixed.
