some small issues with new 4870

so i just got my hands on a used 4870 512mb yesterday to replace my 7900 GTO....wow this thing is sweet:)

anyways had some small issues which seem to be software related. couldn't get the CCC working but i got that fixed now. i ran driver cleaner pro to rid myself of the nvidia drivers. using xp pro 32-bit btw.

so games work fine (hell they run great now) but i've got a few small issues. one is 3dmark 06 won't start (no big loss there) and ati tool won't start either. the cpu usage goes through the roof as well as gpu load and the damn thing just sits there. don't care much about 3dmark, but ati tool would be wonderful to have working for overclocking testing, etc. i'm assuming these issues are related as its the same symptoms.

also not sure if its anything to worry about but i did start up GPU folding client and i've had 2 instances of ati's VPU recover...

i've done driver reinstalls, updated the .net framework, reset defaults in it as well. driver components were installed individually which is how i fixed the CCC not starting problem.

any help would be great, thanks guys.
 
Have you tried Rivatuner? It works for ATI cards as well.
 
thanks exeodus, forgot about rivatuner. it works just fine. nice to have that better control.

one question though - what should i use for overclocking testing? i always just used ati tool until it started to report artifacts then just backed off a bit. lazy man's way i guess.
 
Just run a graphics-intensive game like Crysis and look for artifacts, using Rivatuner's temperature monitoring tool in the background to see if the temp stays within acceptable limits.
 
what version of the drivers are you using?

Have you upped the fan speed so it actually cools the card? That SHOULD take care of the VPU recovers in F@H.

Does your power supply at least the minimum listed specs for the card?
 
for the 3dmark issue - got to c/windows/system32/futuremark

open the only folder and delete the ati and other config file. that should fix that problem.
 
version i'm using is the new 9.3 cats.

the fan speed is set to auto...maybe i'll crank it overnight with gpu folding to see what happens. its going to be on water soon anyhow, i just want to solve these small issues to verify that all is well.

i'll try that with 3dmark JDM. i uninstalled it so its gotta be put down fresh again. maybe thats for the best now that i've taken out those files.

oh and PSU is a corsair 620HX....i'm running a heavily o/c'd opteron 165 but its been completely stable for months. hardly a cpu problem i think. or psu for that matter. it was running dual 7900GTO's in SLI also overclocked. i'm not sure, but willing to bet that would eat more power.
 
so it can't be temps causing the gpu folding problems....tried it again and happened almost as soon as it got going
 
Hey, ATITool 0.27beta 4 won't work with the 4870. I miss it too for fan control and temp monitoring. The best app that I found to replace it is Gainward Expert Tool ATI v4. It is great for fan control, temp monitoring, overclocking, and is easier to use than rivatuner. The HD 4870's are very hot when set to auto. Expert Tool set to fixed speed will allow you to vary your fanspeed from 50% to 100%. Try It, You'll Like It!:cool:
