Some Shuttle Questions

Ya, so the search is borked, but I tried looking for anything with "shuttle" in the subject title about 10 pages back and I couldnt find anything that answered my questions.

Anyway, I am planning on ordering a Shuttle SN45G Barebones system within a couple of days and I have a few question, hopefully you all can help me with.

- Is the 200w power supply good enough to run my 9800NP + all the other components?

- Is it worth extra $55 to buy it new (From zipzoomfly) or go for the refurb for 165$? (From Newegg)

I would be using it to play games like HL2+Doom3 (when they come out), CS and UT2K4. I would probably use the PCI slot for a Wireless card once I move into my new house in Cali and setup a wireless network in the house once we are all settled in.

Maybe suggest another Shuttle model for me, I do have a price range though, about 250$ shipped for just the shuttle system, color doesnt matter.

I was planning just to take out the following into my current machine and using it in the shuttle:

WD 80G SE
1Gig Samsung PC3200 (512x2)

or I might just throw in a 512mb PC2100 Crucial ram I had before I upgraded.

And I was just gonna buy a AMD XP 2600+ Barton Retail processor and another CDRW/DVD Drive (Or a DVD+/-RW) + a floppy drive.

If you have any other sites besides newegg/directron/zipzoomfly that offer the Shuttle SN45G please link me, I've been looking for the best price right now. (ZipZoomFly @ $220 new is the best I found so far)

Thanks in advance.

You should be fine with the 200 watt PSU. I was running a p4c @ 3.2ghz, a 9800pro, a gig of RAM and a 74gig Raptor on my 200 watt PSU in my SB61G2.

I say 'was' because I recently upgraded to the new SilentX 250 watt PSU. It wasnt because of power, it was because of noise. The fans in my old 200 watt PSU are fairly shrill.

I think you would be fine going with a refurbed unit, as long as you make sure to beat on it before the limited warrenty runs out. Not that most of us around here are keeping out warrenties valid for very long... The rear fan grill just has to go, say 'buh bye' to your warrenty.

Also, don't bother wasting your PCI slot on a wireless card, go with one of these: http://us.shuttle.com/specs_access.asp?pro_id=318

That way you can use your PCI slot for something else down the road if you need to.

Sweet thanks for the info so far. Especially that Wireless LAN Module, I'll definately look into getting that.

The SN45G is 220$ shipped at ZipZoomFly so I'll probably just get it there and i'll check into newegg's refurb policy a little bit more to see if it's really worth the extra 65$ to buy it new.

I heard that shuttle systems do have problems with overheating. Is that what you were describing when you said the "rear fan grill just has to go?"

Honestly, I'd always trust a new product over a refurbished. Simply due to the fact that you don't know why the item was refurbished in the first place. And as stated, the warranties on new items are choice. I would recommend spending the extra $65. You might be thanking me later...

The only reason overheating is a slight issue in SFF's is simply due to the lack of airflow in such a tiny case. Heat dissipates from the CPU, but where does it have to go? It's like being stuck in a small box with almost no escape.

Usually, it's not that big of a deal though.

Oh, and if you get a v2 SN45G, make sure you DON'T ADJUST THE VDIMM SETTINGS!!! easiest way to get an expensive paperweight

its okay if you get a v1 though :D

They run warmer than your typical enthusiast system , but you should be ok.

If you cut out the fan grill your CPU temps can drop by as much as 10 degrees celsius. Helps to cut down on the noise too.

The systems are designed very well for cooling. The heat is pulled off of the CPU by the heatpipes and pushed out of the system. It doesn't really have a chance to circulate within the system. Other components can get pretty hot though. They will run warm, but stable.

I'm not familiar at all with the vdimm problem. It definatly sounds like something to look into.
