Some SCSI Help please

A friend of mine had an issue and I wanna help him. here is a copy of his email:

I need some advice.

I purchases some used SCSI drives and I am having a problem getting them to work.

They are 80 pin seagates and I am using a 80 pin to 68 pin adapter.

I have gone through all of then manuals (for the controller and for the drives) and they should work.

Everything seems to be compatible (controller, drives, and terminator).

the drives are used and could be bad, but it seems unlikely that all four would be junk (i could see one or two)

I have been trying the drives one at a time and they are the only items (other than the terminator) on the bus.

Now, here is the thing I cannot figure out, If I apply power only to the drives, they will spin up; but when they are connected to the bus, they will not spin -up. I am thinking that it must be a configuration issue. But, I don't know what to try next.

We need to know what drives they are and the controller card he is using.

Full system spec's might not hurt eather.

Look for a setting in the SCSI card's setup BIOS that says something like "Send Startup Command". If it's set to No, and your drives are jumpered to want a request to spin up, they will sit and wait forever.

That option is in there for people who use a bunch of drives in the same cabinet, if they all spun up at once the draw on the power supply would be too much. So they let the SCSI card spin them up one at a time.

If this is how yours is set up, fix is to either set the card's send startup commad option to Yes, or re-jumper the drive to auto-spinup.
