I just started folding on Friday afternoon for Team #33.

I joined hardfolding.com but I still don't show up as a new member and I don't have any stats yet.

Does my computer have to complete it's first folding project before I am added to the books?

I just want to make sure I am doing everything right so that any folding that has been done so far has not been wasted.

I don't really know much about folding but I am starting to get that addicted feeling already.

:D

Thanks for your patience with the noobs.

You won't show up on the folding stats pages until at least an hour or so after you return your first work unit... ;)

Hang in there it will happen...
Welcome to Team 33 ... :D

Welcome to the team!!

Yup, after Stanford recieves your first work unit, it'll add your name (within a few hours)...

I just want to make sure I am doing everything right so that any folding that has been done so far has not been wasted.
All seems well so far! take a look through the FAQ, and let us know if you have any questions. We're here to help as much as we can!

Feel free to let that addiction take hold... It's fun... but in the end, science wins!

Thanks for your patience with the noobs.
Anytime... we were all new to this at some point!

Keep on Folding!!

Welcome. Embrace the addiction. It's good for you, and for all of us.

Druken scots, Mooses, now all we need are a few Ninja's! Anyhow, ignore my rambling and Welcome! Enjoy your stay, get your [H]'s and feel free to bug us all!

Thanks for all the response.

I have another question.

How important is RAM to the folding process?

Being a noob I would thing that CPU speed would be the most important.

RAM actually isn't all that important.... you need it.... but it doesn't need to be the fastest on the market.... pure GHz is mainly what controls how fast your PC will fold (Unless we're talking about comparing CPUs with and without SSE,etc, etc, etc)

the biggest thing RAM will control is the size of the work units you get.... even if you say yes to "big packets" and have the -advmethods flag set, you still won't get the big 600 pointers unless you have at least 256MB of RAM... and these new QMD cores, well, they use RAM like there's no tomorrow... 300-400MB of RAM

Keep on Folding!!

My rule of thumb, if you don't want memory to be causing a problem, is 256MB for a dedicated folding box and 512MB for a box that will be folding and doing other things.

Personnaly I run only 512MB or 1GB.

Ok, I have another one.

How often does the log file on the console version of F@H update itself?

I installed this version on a machine and according to the task manager, F@H is running like crazy but the last entry in the log file says:

Completed 0 out of 250000 steps (0)

Folding@Home Client Shutdown.

So is it folding or not?

we need you to post your entire log file to see. It only updates after each step is completed and that varies from 5 minutes to 40 minutes depending on the protein. I suggest you configure EM3 so that you do not need to keep going back to the log file.

Check to make sure that you're looking at the correct log file... there are usually 2... FAHlog-Prev.txt and FAHlog.txt....

Did you accidentally install it in two locations?

Keep on Folding!!

here is the entire log:

The next time the computer is starts up, you should see work automatically
continue there. Note that when this service is running, you should not try
to manually run F@H from that directory at the same time.

Folding@Home Client Shutdown.

First thing I would recommend, would be to create a Folding directory on your Hard drive, and put the executible in there... Then run the program,etc,etc... that may eliminate the problem... I've never seen anyone run F@H from the desktop, but I'm not sure it'll work right...

Keep on Folding!!

It updates the log everytime it completes a step. Make sure you close the file and reopen it though ;)
