I purchased quad led 80mm fans from a site many years ago and the leds on all the fans went out one by one within a year. What would cause this? I remember my side fan would flicker on and off very intermittently.
over voltage, under voltage, vibration, power surges from flickering. all of the above, over voltage more so that any thing else, will lead to premature death of LEDs that and they are probably using the cheapest leds they can find to keep costs down. along side of a resistor to control voltage to the led, if the resistor isnt the right rating (and they often aren't) will it overvolt slightly. using the right parts costs money, and people are not willing to pay the money to have the right parts in something as cheap as a fan. so... the flashy leds die a slow but well before MTFB death, meanwhile, the fan still works..
