So i've had my 3gs for almost a week now and i have a couple questions so far.

First off, when using 3G, does the speed at which it goes have any correlation to signal strength (so full bars will mean better speeds than half the bars)? I also presume Wifi is generally faster, and that I should add as many perma-wifi zone as I can, right?

I find myself pressing the home button a lot, even if, say, i'm using an app that then puts me into google maps or the internet to view info and then to get back to the app i have to press the home button and reload it. Is there a better way?

I think i've done a pretty solid initial sweep of the apps (generally the free ones) and gotten the ones I'd want or that are pertinent to want (although I would like a better flight tracking one than the one I have), but if I want to find other top ones (as I occasionally did read about cool ones in newspaper article of "top 10 must have apps" or something (subsequent google searches though have turned up rather dated articles), or find out if the app I have is the best of its kind for what it does, what is the best place for that?

It was raining yesterday and I had the iphone in my jean pocket. I was/am still babying it so I was afraid to run several blocks to my car thinking it might be bad, how suceptible is the iphone to moisture (I have a screen protector, but nothing else yet)?

which brings me to my next question, I do want to get a protector for the rest of the phone, however, I kind of do like it's look the way it is, so if i get something I dont want it to be some bulky spongy ugly thing, I want it to be stylish and cool. Where is the best place to browse really rad but quality/functional Iphone cases?

1. AFAIK, the signal strength has nothing to do with the 3G speed, other than the obvious availability.

2. Nope, not having true multitasking is one of the iPhone's flaws.

3. The only way is to download the app and try it, or trust the reviews at the app store.

4. As susceptible as any phone is to moisture, really.

5. A protector is a good idea if you're babying it, otherwise don't worry about it. The Speck Candy Shell seems to be a good one for not adding too much bulk.

hence me asking about other good places that reccomend some of the better apps.

I understand a protector is a good idea, but my question more pertained on where to look for really cool/functional ones.
 
The iPhone doesn't multitask at all, beyond occasionally polling for unread email: you can run only one app at a time. So yes, you'll be hitting the home button a lot. iPhone software works around this by having apps reference other apps. For example, if you look up an address in Google Maps, you can call them just by tapping their phone number listing. If you're reading a Twitter app and there's a web link in the tweet, you can click the link and Safari will open inside the Twitter app.

As far as app reviews go, no idea. Just Google, I'm sure there are some good sites. I know iLounge occasionally does batch app reviews.
 
First off, I own a 1st gen iPod touch. I plan on buying an iPhone eventually, but I don't have first hand experience with one.

When I'm looking at app reviews, I basically take a look at what reviews I can find on websites and then see what the folks in the App store are saying. Just use your best judgement, and try out the free demo version if one is available.

I wouldn't worry about moisture from some rain. Just don't drop it in a bucket or something and you'll probably be fine.

Finally, I wouldn't worry about a case, but that's just me. If I did get one, it'd probably be one of those invisible shield ones. For the record, I have had my iPod touch for nearly 2 years now and haven't managed to scratch the screen. The back of the case is another story, but that doesn't affect the functionality of it at all, so I could care less!
 
Check out Agent 18 cases, they're pretty nice. I use an Incipio case for my iPhone 3G which is nice if you want to take the silicone route.
 
I used a casing briefly, but found that it made the already bulky (imho) iPhone all the more bigger and more difficult to keep comfortably in my pocket. Plus, the casings that I have used (three styles) all tended to keep dirt/dust/grime close to the phone.

For apps, you will also need to read various reviews to verify that the * star rating is correct. Several idiots don't grasp the concept that one star is not as good a rating as a five star. So they rate an app as one star and then rave about how great the app is.

And also, make sure to read just the reviews for the current/latest version. There is a link at the bottom of the app front page.
 
I have the switcheasy rebel case, and recommend it. I have the artic case with a gelaskin under it. [PIC]
