Hopefully I post this in the right area... Well I decided to buy bad company 2 off steam because I heard nothing but good things, I install it and jump right into the multiplayer... The problem is I go in and I get horrible lag and rubber banding. My ping is around 208 with all the settings at low. I'm currently running...

Pentium D core duo 2.66GHz
2GB Ram
GeForce 9600GT 512mb
2TB HDD(doesn't really matter)
Windows 7 Ultimate
10MB Cable Modem

I went to the BC2 forum and their telling me my rig is out dated and no point in even trying without a quad and to just build another computer yet I go to other forums who claim their running it on max with my rig but with a better video card. I was wondering if anyone had some tips or info that could help me out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What resolution are you attempting to run it at??

Try a lower ping server too, that can cause some issues with other players lagging/jumping/rubberbanding/flashing/whatever you want to call it

I have a dual-core running at 3ghz. A quad-core is definitely not a requirement, though I'm sure it gives a decent performance boost. Your ram could use an upgrade and that's not too expensive. I'd consider doubling it up to 4gb.

Before I bought my 5850 I ran BC2 on an 8800gt 512mb with otherwise the same system and ran at all medium at 1900x1200 no AA/AF/etc. If you keep your settings relatively low you should be fine.

If it's actually ping related stuttering I'll second the motion to find a low ping server. What region are you in? You can filter the server browser to look at just your region, then sort by ping.

A Pentium D is very different from a Core2... so you can't really say 'dual cores are fine' in that context.

The GPU is also very weak.

RAM is a little on the low side...

However, ping shouldn't really suffer.

A 2.66GHz Pentium D is really not enough to comfortably run BC2. It's a game that actually uses multiple cores, and the minimum you need to get a good experience would be a Core 2 Duo or a Phenom II X2 running at a decent frequency. As for the rubber-banding, that's an internet latency issue, not something to do with your computer. You'll need to play on servers with lower ping, or you'll have to find a way to reduce the latency of your internet connection if there's something wrong with it.

I'm going to echo the rest here. The cpu is around 5 years old. I really wouldn't expect it to run modern games. Listing it as a 'core duo' is a little misinforming. As already said, a Pentium D is a dual core cpu, but it is not a Core2Duo, which is the next generation beyond.

The good news is your motherboard supports Socket 775, which means you could upgrade your CPU to a Core2Duo. For a recommendation, we would need to know what motherboard you have.

Also, your GPU would need to be upgraded. A 9 series GPU is older, let alone a 9600, which is a budget GPU.

2GB of memory is OK, but if you upgraded your CPU and GPU, and had extra cash, I would jump to 4GB. Improving the memory without the GPU/CPU would likely give you little to no positive results, other than maybe faster loading times.

Overall, depending on CPU support, I would guess a $100 investment for a CPU and $100 for a GPU and it would get you into the decent performance range to get you by until your next system.

My ping is around 208 with all the settings at low.

First, ping in BC2 is a bit different than elsewhere:

The ingame "ping" isnt really ping. It is how far, time wise, you are behind the server. It includes the time for information to get to the server, get processed, get back to your computer and processed.

In the server browser the actual ping is reported. I get around 20-30 in the browser and ~100 ingame.

Note a slower PC will increase what is reported in game. The slower your pc the more out of sync you are with the server.

But I don't think your PC specs are the problem here. There are countless complaints out there about BC2 suffering high ping times not experienced by other games on the same PC. I found one possible router fix, which I will quote here:

BC2 is infamous for disliking routers with UPNP turned on, unlike other games that demand that feature on.

Check your router manual and try UPNP on or off and this can make a huge difference for some players in BC2 MP.

The rubber banding issue I believe is partly related to how the stat server collects stats or something related to the server, not client. Apparently the fix is to wait out the round, and the next round should be fine. I have this issue with some servers that ping and/or physically closer than other servers, and it it sorts itself out after the round.

This game is a massive CPU hog and you really only have 1 physical CPU, the game can run badly on a good quad core, it's still not completely smooth all the time on my Q9450@3.6Ghz

I don't think that should be causing rubber banding though, I suspect it would cause an unplayable frame rate though.

For some alien reason I don't on BC2 yet, but I tried it briefly in open beta or demo or w/e right before launch, with sigrig (with 8800gt) and it ran just fine on medium settings.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pentium D is choking your performance. You can check your cpu usage and DPC latency while playing (DPC caused horrible rubber banding for me in another game), but ultimately I dont think you can do much but upgrade that rig

I think this is an anti-cheat method some online games use.

For example, in EverQuest, when you start to lag, the game server accepts your new location, regardless of how far you traveled while there was no connection. This only does not happen if you go LD. As long as the connection comes back before LD, your new position is accepted.

Other MMOG's/Online games will 'rubberband' you back to the last location it remembers you. It's highly fucking annoying. Even more so when there's a lot of lag because you can't even walk anywhere. I would never implement this if I was a game developer.

a Pentium D is 2 real cores just as much as you have 4 real cores with your Core 2 quad. a Pentium D is super slow though and at 2.66, it would be slower than a modern Core 2 duo(E8xxx) at just 1.3.

the game is perfectly smooth on my E8500@3.8 and gtx260. I can run DX10 high settings with 2x AA at 1920x1080 just fine about 45-55 fps without HBAO and about 5 fps less with it on. I rarely ever dip below 35 even during heavy action and have ran tons of benchmarks in this game. now that is for single player so I am sure it would be worse if I played multi though.

Ping is never related on the speed of the PC, it is an issue directly related to your network connection. You can have a superb ping and your game still lags like crap simply as you have your old department store computer from 2004 running a game it can't handle. Or vice versa having a superb gaming machine being bored about the game at like 5% CPU load while your ping simply is sooo bad. generally - the closer the server is network wise the lower the ping the lower the latency the less lag you have. But "ping" is really just the time it takes for one network package to the server and back. Whatever you do to your computer you can't speed up the line or shorten the distance/number of hops.

Thanks for all the help guys... I built my computer a while back and never realized how old it really got until I got BC2. I even played Crysis 2 demo without any problems. I figured since I have a cpu cooler and vga cooler and six computer fans I could pull off overclocking it but I guess my pc is just too old for it anyways. Now the question is what would you guys recommend me getting? No question about me upgrading my ram, that's a must... Also a new video card soon. My motherboard is a DG965RY, not sure how far I could upgrade from there. I was also looking around this forum at the classifieds section and noticed some people selling parts, if you would recommend me doing a complete overhaul would there be any people you prefer buying/selling from or completely stay away from? Again thanks a lot for all the information.
