Sorry guys to post up another thread, (Where'd that recovery sticky go) but I'm in some need. I've worked on fixing computers from the OS and did that pretty successfully most of the time. However, this time, my dad brings in a co-worker's comp and says it won't boot. So I think it'll be a safemode/restore job, but I can't even get to a boot menu because of it won't even read the drives. I tried the recovery console, and it sees both partitions C: and D: but it can't read anything on them with DIR. The exact error is: "An error occured during directory enumeration". I tried CHKDSK but it wouldn't run.
So after reading up some, I did a fixboot - and now the C is accessible, but it looks empty (10 gigs - 40k is used). D: still shows the error above.
The worst part is, this computer's a Sony PVC-W10 one of these all-in-one computers. It's very stylish, but I can't even rip out the hard drive to hopefully recover files. This recovery has be done soley on the computer itself.
I think the hard drive itself is ok, and I could do a whole system repair and recover with the original cds but I want to try and repair/recover some files if possible. I've got the knoppix CD burned, and Linux is cool, but I don't really know where to start from there.
Any ideas guys? I'll give the owner a call tomorrow night to see if he really needs to save anything, otherwise, I'll just reformat. But if he does...can you guys help any?
