I'm looking for some suggestions on where to go with this setup as far as cooling goes...
System:
P4 2.4C @ 3.0 GHz, 1.5v, stock HSF
1GB Corsair DC TwinX PC3700, running at DCDDR500
Abit IC7, 250 MHz FSB
BFG 5900U, out of the box speeds.
(temps in celsius, as that's what the intel docs, and nvidia panel report in.
So far I seem to have a stable overclock going, but the temps make me a bit wary. The 5900 is idling at 50C, CPU idles at 49-52C, and pegs at about 66C with Prime95 sitting on the max heat torture test. The NVidia control panel reads the ambient at 42.
Now, 8C is a fair bit of headroom, but it's 5AM and rather cool at the moment.
The environment is not exactly conducive to cooling, as it's an upper floor apartment with no AC, no breeze to speak of, and smack dab in SoCal. I've seen ambient temps on the CP reported at up to about 47 in the late afternoon/early evening, and those were at 2.8 GHz. I suspect the CPU temp could probably creep up towards the intel official top end of 74C without too much trouble in some cases.
Would a beefier HSF help out, or should I just bite the bullet and start looking into h2o? Some basic requirements are: Has to handle running for days or weeks at a stretch, can't rely on babysitting.
