I plan on setting up a VERY SIMPLE file server with a RAID 5 array for media applications. (MP3, DVD ISOs, etc. streamed to clients). Currently have a boot drive (40 GB) for it and already own (2) 250GB 7200 PATA Maxtor drives. It will be running Win XP Pro. I have a dedicated HTPC machine that will do recordings and batch transfer files to this server on a nightly basis.
questions are as follows:
1) I believe it is possible, but can anyone confirm that I can mix SATA and PATA drives (I have adapters available) in order to run all off of the same controller?
2) I believe it is possible, but can anyone confirm that I can mix BRANDS/MODELS of drives in order to run all off of the same controller?
3) I am most interested in a card that will support (4) drives for now, but that will be able to both add drives and/or swap to larger capacity drives (ie from 250GB to 400GB) in the future. In reading here, it seems that possibilities could be 3ware, LSI, Adaptec, Promise, Highpoint, and Broadcom. Leaving anyone out?
4) As speed on the array is not an issue, are there any particular favorites that I should be looking at or should price rule the day?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
