Some advice before I buy this lcd?

Hello,

I'm new to the forum here. Great information!

I am looking to buy an lcd and leaning toward the Samsung 910T. The price is right and it seems like a nice monitor. I do a lot of web browsing, some movie watching, some gaming, and general office type stuff (word, excel, etc..).
My questions are regarding gaming. I'm not what you would call a huge gamer. Some of the games I play are Diablo, Baldurs Gate series. Would these be affected by the slow 25 ms response time? There's some hacking/slashing in those games but was wondering if it would look ok. Also, I dont' play many fps type of games. I do on occasion play the MOA and Call of Duty games but I don't try to max frame rates or anything.
My vid card is an ATI Radeon 9800Pro.
A review I read somewhere, I forget where, said that movies seemed to be fine on this monitor.

Thanks in advance for all your help! Your advice is appreciated,

thank you,
Joe

I have the 910T and use it solely for word processing, working with digital photos and heavy web surfing. It is hooked up via DVI. Colors look great. I am very pleased with it.

I am not a gamer so I can't comment on using the monitor for that use.

you might consider buying a 17" LCD since the resolution is the same, it will have a better refresh rate, and cost less

To simply put it, Yes you will, The more action (video motion) the more of a chance you will see it.

hey... a fellow drummer!! (im assuming.... im also assuming youre using german in your name. love deutsch. :) )

anyways... id recommend a 17" LCD since itll cost you less, but provide you with the same amount of desktop space. the Dell 17" UltraSharp is a great monitor. i just got it for christmas.

and basically any higher end samsung will be great, too. just make sure to look for: DVI, sub-20 ms response, and 1280x1024 native resolution.

In my own personal experience, playing Diablo 2 had the worst blur of just about any game I've ever seen on an LCD...even my friend's 2001fp. Running around with my Barbarian at maxed out speed turned everything on the screen into a mess. The little imps in the 3rd chapter especially, they blurred to high heaven and it made it hard to follow what they were doing and where they were going. I haven't played Baldur's Gate on an LCD, but I have with Planescape:Torment, which has the same engine, and it was much less affected than Diablo 2, but the blur I did see was annoying. I'm sure other people would be able to play these games on one, so if possible, see if you can test them out yourself. Isometric games tend to take it a lot worse, so I'd go for faster than 25ms rated if I were you....Though depending on the 25ms display, it might be faster than another one at 16ms...how convenient!

Everyone,

Thank you for your replies. I think I'll hold off on getting an LCD for now. My Trinitron 19" monitor is still as good as the day I bought it.

TSS Modder: Yes I'm a drummer....No German though..I just liked the name. :)

Thanks again for the advice!

Joe

No LCD in the world, with the possible exceptions of the $9,000 IBM one and the $2000 Apple Cinema Display's are worth trading a Trinitron monitor for. You'll be seriously disappointed if you do that switch.

And the claus to your statement is that an apple cinema display might be better then a trinitron??

Are not the ACD's total crap for gaming? I just about tossed my trinitron out the window when I bought my 19" LCD with a 16ms response...

I have an old Trinitron 19" CRT (thats the totally flat one, not the vertically flat one) and it looks better than the LCD my dad bought and returned, which had a 12ms response time. I just got a brand new 19" Mitsubishi Diamondtron 93sb and the image is incredible; even better than my old Sony. Aperture grille CRT's are just unbeatable. Shadow mask ones kinda suck, but those aren't used for design work and are only for cost effectiveness. ACD's are good if you want to have good color, which is rare in LCD's. The IBM one is for special applications like CAD, design and mission critical imaging. The ACD is only better if you really must have a shallow monitor, otherwise its a ripoff compared to a good quality, aperture grille CRT.
