some 4890 help please...

I bought one [H]ere and got it in the mail today, unplugged my 4870 (yes, after powering down my rig) took it out, plugged the 4890 in and once windows loaded and the desktop appeared...BSOD, booted up again and almost the same thing except this time it lasted a few seconds longer and the screen went white, the next two times instead of going white the screen went gray, the fifth time went back to a BSOD...

I took it out and plugged my 4870 back in and voila, no problems, no BSODs, no funky blank screens in the hour or so since, I have a 1kw ProXstream and have run my 4870 paired with a 4850 in mixed crossfire so I don't think it's a power issue, a 4870 and 4850 together would pull moar powah than a 4890, right...?

any suggestions...?
 
Try the 4890 in the 2nd slot and and continue to use your 4870 as the primary, see if works in crossfire like that.

I would try it in a freinds rig. Take a look at the 4890 and see if any caps or anything like that are missing. I would delete the drivers using normally, then boot in safe mode and use driver cleaner. Then try the 4890.
 
I would have removed the driver before removing the 4870, then booted it into windows clean in VGA mode for the install. You should always remove your previous card/drivers before a new card installation, unless that card is staying in your machine.
 
I've never had any problems with having to do "clean" installs before, I went straight from my 4850 to my 4870 with no problems but have now removed all the ATI drivers as was suggested earlier, ran driver sweeper and reinstalled, I am actually typing while running the 4890 right now...

my H55 only has only one PCI-e slot, so I may just wait until my MSI P55 GD80 comes (sometime this week) and try it with that, I've already transferred the warranty over on the XFX site so I have time to see what's up given that even the second (transferred) warranty is lifetime as well, no...?

it "seems" to be running alright at the moment...
 
I have found lately, that when I have changed out a GPU, even if it was the same company.....I had to remove and reinstall the drivers for the card to work correctly.....wierd, but I had the same problem as you with a 4870 and a 4890. Basically just had to reinstall the driver after using ATI uninstaller and everything's been fine.

and right after I posted that it crashed again with a clean install of the drivers (and yes I used driver sweeper as well), I'm just gonna try it when my GD80 comes and if it still crashes I'm just gonna RMA it...the 4870 has been chugging along after the multiple swap outs so even if I had a friend with a psu that could handle the card (I don't) I wouldn't stick it in a friend's system because what's the point...? it's not my system or the 4870 would be crashing as well...

looks like RMAing it is inevitable, I wish that damn GD80 would hurry up and get here, I ordered it Wednesday and it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow (gotta love teh 'egg's 3 day shipping..yeah right) but the update screen is showing it arrived in Philly yesterday and hasn't been updated since...

at least I'm not out a video card as I still have my 4870, a 4850 in another system and a 9600GT sitting as a back up, but still...it's frustrating...

Do you have a spare hdd laying around?? Do a clean OS install if you get bored and see what happens.
I'm kinda curious though - why even bother going from a 4870 to a 4890? Hardly seems worth your trouble.

He's getting a dual PCIe16 board, so he should have xfire capabilities, soon.

Also lower idle clocks, iirc. But those can be manually adjusted in the BIOS.

my 4870 is showing it's age in Clear Sky, and I plan on getting Call of Pripyat so I want the performance boost, which will be more than you think because it's a 512MB 4870...

I may end up getting a 5850 if the prices drop enough in the FS forum though...
 
so I got my camera back from my GF and took some pictures in case I have to RMA the card and saw something on the back of the PCB that doesn't really look "normal", looks to be some type of residue in spots and I have no idea where it could've come from, definitely not anything in my case, I've had the card for less than 24 hours now and have registered it with XFX in case it needs to be RMAed, should I be worried, is this something that may prevent them from accepting the RMA...?

btw the seller has been great about this (which was expected because his heat is excellent) and even offered to refund or do the RMA himself, which I didn't think was necessary because that would mean both of us being out shipping costs, me back to him and then him to XFX, instead of just me to XFX, I got it at the best price I've seen yet in the FS section so a few extra bucks to get a replacement isn't gonna set me back or inconvenience me at all because my 4870 is still chugging along with zero issues...

the only problem that I can see is if the RMA gets denied and I get the same card sent back to me, that would suck...
 
I would not worry about that residue, I think it's flux or something. Regardless I've seen it on video cards before so i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be there.

I'm gonna try the card on my GD80 today and if I still have issues I'm gonna start the RMA process...
 
I suggest you do a bit of research on issues with 5870 and 4890. Look into GSOD.

I have the p55-GD65 and continue to have issues with it. I'd be interested in your results.
 
Before you send it back, you might want to make sure that you've got the latest BIOS for your M/B, the latest BIOS for your video card, and that you've tried it with just one stick of RAM and no other PCI cards installed.

I've installed the GD80 and have experienced no problems with the 4890 as of yet, but it's only been a hour at the most, the layout of the board is much better than the DH55HC though, that much is for sure, the first slot in the DH55HC was the x16 slot, which put the video card PCB about 1 or 2 millimeters from my Corsair memory cooler, now there's plenty of clearance because the GD80's first slot is a x1...

I have my fingers crossed, please pray for me...lol...

EDIT: running like a champ for 4 hours now after it never lasting even a half hour on the DH55HC, I think my DH55HC may have needed a bios update or something, because I've had no problems with it in the P55 GD80...

and oh yeah, I got ALL the accessories with the open box GD80, I had to look up what came with it because I thought they even gave me some extra stuff...lol...

anyway, 15 minutes of Furmark and no problems, Prime95 running all night no problems, I mention Prime95 because even when I would do something simple like click on FF the video was going out so just the fact that a program, any program was running all night with no video problems is a win at this moment, the funny thing is that I thought the last board (Intel DH55HC) may have needed a bios update or something and that may have been causing the problems, but the GD80's bios isn't up to date either...lol...

I now am officially in love with MSI, especially the P55 GD80...
