Solvent Welding
I've been dreaming up a frosted white plexiglass case for a while now, and one of the major hurdles, in my mind at least, has been thinking of a way to connect the pieces. I've read a little bit about solvent welding and it seems like a very practical method of construction; does anyone know where i can read more about this, or has anyone done it themselves?
 
I use a product call weldon # 3 or 4.

It's not as easy as it sounds. You have to have a nice clamping system to make right angles and the cut need to be really nice for the best quality.

Now if you have that figured out welding works really, really well!!!

Acrylic that is 3/16 or bigger works better. I would not try it on anything thinner.
 
I think most people use acrylic chips dissolved in acetone, IIRC.

I've never thus far had to glue acrylic, but I'm interested in how one would.

How would one do a 90 degree edge joint on two long pieces?

You can glue cement together with it!!!!

Dries Crystal Clear, and at 100% strength, it is literally a 'weld-bond'

although it can be purchased many places now... it was scarce, not many people knew about it..... It is rather expensive

Last I bought it it was $16 for 1/2 gallon...

You can get it in smaller quantities... but i can't tell you a price, I only know what I purchased....

1/2 gallon lasts a while for small uses,years if not FROZEN, but when using it for contracting as I do, it goes fast........... It has HUNDREDS if not thousands of uses!!!!

I would recommened it for Plexi use...
 
Have you USED it for acrylic sheeting?

Gluing together pieces of HIGHLY textured cement isn't directly comparable to gluing together acrylic, I believe that the preferred route is to use some nasty chemical solvents which partially dissolve the acrylic, then slowly evaporate.

And also... What can't you glue cement together with :)?

Elmer's School Glue...I could go on....

And by the cement comment I meant it to be for use under stress it holds......

And YES, I have glued Plexi together with it, and MANY other things...

Try to help..... try to introduce something that alot of people have no clue exists, and I get this.............

oh well, use solvents, use a blowtorch...whatever.........
