I was looking on newwegg at the solid state drive. I see they have a 128 gig SUPER TALENTfor 3000. Then they have a128 gig OCZ Core for 500 and a 128 gig RiDATA for 475. I was just wondering why the huge price difference. If the 500 one are worth it i might save up for one get for my alineware laptop to save power. I just want to know why the price difference and if the cheaper one are worth or a close to 3000 then i might get.
 
I've read up a bit on the Super Talents, they seem to be real bargain bin. Poor performance and low reliability.The common belief is that they are more like a cheap compact flash card used as a hard drive.

The amount of power saved from a SSD is still hotly debated, but at best I wouldn't expect much of a gain; maybe around 15-20 minutes. The SSD is considerably faster and a lot tougher though.
 
An SSD isn't going to do much of anything for battery life. A few generations from now (meaning SSD generations) they'll be vastly more efficient and will more than likely be much lower in power consumption that the current state/generation of SSD hardware.

As it is right now today, there isn't any SSD on the market that will do anything of consequence for battery life. Neither does LED backlights in LCD panels either, but some companies are sure pushing them on laptops like they're the next big thing...
 
But holy crap are they fast!

I setup a laptop for one of the managers at work last week, brand new 12" HP with the ULV 1.3GHz Intel, 2GB DDR2, and a 64GB SSD, I expected it to be slllooowww with that cpu, but it really flew.
 
They "fly" because they have the same speed from beginning to end, they're not like physical hard drives that are faster from the beginning of the drive and tend to slow down. If you see most hard drive benchmarks they'll typically be higher and then gradually slope downward (meaning they get slower towards the end of the drive, the area closest to the drive motor spindle, the outer edges technically are the beginning of the drive's usable space). Solid state drives are just chips sooo... they'll have a speed that looks almost like a flat line start to finish.

Most SSDs aren't truly as fast overall as physical hard drives (but we're talking about Velociraptors though) in terms of max output with just a single drive, but they are gaining speed fast. The technology is developing quite rapidly so, I'd say within 3 years SSD hardware will become more popular than physical hard drives from strictly the performance perspective.

Now as for pricing... considering 1TB drives can be found for $125 if you look in the right places these days or close to it, I doubt we're gonna see a 1TB SSD anytime soon, and even if one existed today, it would cost probably in excess of $5,000 sooo... the pricing will come down over time as well.

you're forgetting the most important part - the incredibly low access times

Contrary to others posts here, there is a lower battery draw with MOST SSD drives. It all depends on the drive itself. There are some platter based drives with low power draw and some SSD with a high power draw, it all depends on the drives, but overall the SSD tends to draw less power on average.

I've read nothing good about them (except the price), a lot of talk about data corruptions and disappointing performance
someone on here did a real nice, in depth review of them
don't have the link, but if you search around, it should be easy to find
