Ok gentlemen,

On dangerden's website they list several pelts. Without going into too much detail I will be trying a water chiller project that will need to absorb around 100 watts of heat. Anywho that really isn't that important. What I need to know is 'potted' pelts are talking about potenciometers (sp?) right? Meaning SOMETHING on them is adjustable. Amps? Volts? Then my other question is the rated power on them are maxes? Can I underpower them without a problem and just expect a lower heat wattage absorbed? Oh and where the hell do I get power supplies that put out wierd things like 24volts and 11 amps DC without paying 100+ dollars.
 
Potted pelts are just sealed around the edges to reduce the possibility of condensation from the hot side to the cold side. That is all it is, nothing adjustable. The lower the wattage fed to the pelt, the less the heat reduction on the cold plate and ultimately on the CPU. You can find dedicated 12 and 24 volt power supplies at http://www.mpja.com/listitems.asp?dept=3&main=1 or Google for dedicated power supplies. You need to not only get the correct voltage, but also the correct amperage for the pelt you have.
 
ok so if i hook it up to power supply that provides more than it needs will it just draw what it wants and be fine or will it overload it.

ARGH! I can't find 24v at 11-12amps power supply!
 
It's just another electrical appliance and will overload if the incoming electrical is more than it is rated for. The power supply has to be matched to the device. Think of plugging a 110v lamp into a 220v outlet...it's the the same basic principle. The result would be excesive resistance creating heat at the contacts and the weakest point will be broken (shorted). In the case of a lamp, the bulb filament would go, in a pelt, most likely one of the power wires would melt.

More accuratley:
Match the VOLTAGE.

Heres what you need to do:
1) Pick the pelt you want. Anything less than a 172 for todays CPUs is pointless if you are already taking the dive and spending the $$$.

2) Check the Vmax of the pelt.

3) Pick a PSU that is rated for DC output voltage equal to or less than that of the Vmax. The PSU must also be rated to handle equal to or more than that of the wattage draw: Imax * Vmax = Max peak Wattage draw.

Then your fine. Make sure to read an article or two about insulation, neoprene, dielectric grease, etc so you don't kick yourself for blowing something up.

Note: It is OK to pick a PSU with slightly less ouput voltage than that of the Vmax, but it is not OK to go over.

To make it easy on you, I would just get the 226w potted pelt from DD with the Meanwell PSU they sell(it fits in a 5.25" bay). Getting the Maze4 cpu block would make it even easier for you. I own this exact setup(not on pc in sig).

Swiftech also makes good pelt/wb combos from what I hear on this board, although I don't have any experience with them.

Good info...explains some points I needed clarified. But I am not putting this on a chip I am going to use the pelt to chill my water res...thats the easiest way to explain it.

So basically match the voltage and I can drop the amps but I will lose cooling. Does anyone offhand know the formula of volts...amps....watts. So I can figure out at a certain voltage with so many amps I get so much watts of heat absorbtion (assuming 100% conservation of energy). And where would I find good articles on neoprene and condesation insulation.
