Did you guys see the plans for this solar and wind powered skyscraper? The whole thing looks pretty cool, if they can pull it off.

A skyscraper in Dubai is being designed so that it generates all of its energy through renewable means such as wind turbines and solar panels. On top of the tower will be a 200 foot turbine that harnesses the power of the wind, and an array of solar panels on the roof and a series of islands that stretches over 161,459 square feet.

since its dubai it might actually get built. they seem to be the only ones that follow through on shit like that.

Damn I thought it was the Solar Wind... the wind in outerspace coming from the sun... that would be one high up highrise.

I was wondering when reading the title if they weren't going to generate electricity by using the pendulum movements.

Oh and yes, Dubai will build this, they are the only ones who are not scared of trying new things.

Correction, they seem to be the only ones with gobs of money they can throw at projects to get them completed.

It's amazing what you can do rolling in billions of US dollars.

It's not about the money.

Why you ask?

Well look at our new "Freedom Towers"... just plain buildings IMO... a little more design than the traditional American box building... but thats it.

Now go look at any of Dubai's buildings, way more design, way more challenge.

I have to dig up the article for you, but they did a interview with American counterparts and those designers and builders said that they would never risk designs like that and it's too flamboyant (aka, not American taste). These guys in Dubai are paying less for their buildings than what we are not just in construction, but in design too.... interesting eh? The Burji Dubai building (tallest building in the world), will stand at 162-216 floors when completed... 61-115 more floors than the Taipei 101 and will end up costing less than the Freedom towers... and have more design (not to mention nearly 1,000-1,700 feet more than the CN tower!!!) (Twice the height of the Empire state building to give you an idea).

Its a little bit based on necessity, the necessity of keeping things cool more than creating electricity.

They *could* use regular old fashioned coal or fossil fuel burning power plants, but not surprisingly, they add greatly to the heat of the immediate area (just latent heat, in addition to the carbon emissions)

Dubai is scorching hot already, they build the islands like gigantic oceanic heatsinks to wick away the heat. On the mainland its probably unbearable to your average tourist.

Solar is perfect there because it does not create any extra heat to generate electrcity, as a matter of fact, it often cools the area because you can sit underneath the panels and use it like a giant sunshade. Plants don't grow in the desert, so by blocking the sun, its not being wasted (whereas in many fertile areas, you are killing off any plant life that may need the sun)
